Argentina v Switzerland

Lionel Messi will lead Argentina against a Switzerland side that has vowed to close him down in Sao Paulo. The Barcelona forward who became the first Argentina player to score in four successive World Cup matches since Guillermo Stabile in 1930, has so far netted four times in three games and is a strong favourite to add to his tally on Tuesday.

In team news, Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero has been ruled out with a thigh injury he suffered against Nigeria in the group stages and could be replaced by Ezequiel Lavezzi.

Switzerland, in the meantime, will be without striker Mario Gavranovic, who has been ruled out of the rest of the World Cup with a torn anterior cruciate ligament he suffered during a training session.

Bayern Munich winger Xherdan Shaqiri, who scored all three goals in his team’s 3-0 win over Honduras to book their last 16 place, will again start as the dangerman for Switzerland, who remains confident of upsetting one of the World Cup pre-tournament favourites.

Both teams have met six times with Argentina still to taste a defeat, after winning four and drawing two of the head-to-head clashes.

USA v Belgium

The final round of 16 game on Tuesday comes from the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador where USA and Belgium battle for a quarter-finals place.

On paper, the Belgians, the World Cup “dark-horses” will start as the favourites to secure the victory, but will not be underestimating a very well organized USA team, which has been impressive thus far at this year’s tournament.

Belgium have problems in the backline though, with central defenders Vincent Kompany and Thomas Vermaelen both doubtful for the contest. Skipper Kompany is confident he will shake off a groin strain and play a part in the game, but Arsenal’s Vermaelen look well set to miss out with a knee injury.

Midfielder Steven Defour is out for sure as he’s banned for one game after seeing red against South Korea in the final group game, with Laurent Ciman and Anthony Vanden Borre also ruled out.

For the United States, forward Jozy Altidore has returned to training and has been listed as available for the Belgium game. Altidore hasn’t played since the first game and missed the last two matches with a hamstring injury he picked up against Ghana in the group stage.

It is still uncertain that he will play a part in this World Cup fixture, with head coach Jurgen Klinsmann set to keep the same team that was defeated 1-0 by Germany the last time out.

This means that captain Clint Dempsey will continue to lead he attack.
