TEXAS, Sporting Alert – Week 2 NFL 2015 preseason scores and results, following the games that took place from Aug. 20-24.
The Minnesota Vikings continued their winning form in preseason on Saturday with a 20-12 win over the Oakland Raiders at TCF Bank Stadium.
Teddy Bridgewater was 10-of-14 for 89 yards and threw a touchdown pass to receiver Charles Johnson in the second quarter as Minnesota rallied to score its third successive exhibition victory and stayed undefeated in the warmups.
Chase Ford also caught a touchdown pass from Shaun Hill in the second quarter, where the Vikings outscored the Raiders 13-3.
Johnson finished the game with four catches for 40 yards and Bridgewater, who himself has been impressive so far in the two games – going 22-of-28 for 219 yards – thinks the 26-year-old, who led the team with five targets, is “a huge threat.”
“He’s a huge threat, a guy that size (6-foot-2, 217) who can run,” the quarterback was quoted as saying by the Associated Press. “He’s very physical also.
“We like to get him on mismatches, and we had one tonight and it ended up being a touchdown.”
Sophomore Derek Carr finished with 4-of-8 for 78 yards and Christian Ponder ended with 7-of-11 for 69 yards for Oakland.
Former Alabama wide receiver Amari Cooper took one of his two targets, which was delivered by Carr, for 40 yards in the defeat, while Latavius Murray rushed four times for 20 yards and one touchdown.
The Raiders, who tallied 289 total yards from 63 plays, were penalized 13 times for 106 yards – compared to the Vikings’ one penalty for 10 yards.
“Clearly not the kind of clean performance we’re looking for,” said Oakland coach Jack Del Rio.
At the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, the New England Patriots rallied from a 21-0 point deficit in the second quarter, to slip past the New Orleans Saints 26-24 in their NFL preseason fixture.
The Saints raced out to a 21-0 lead with Brandin Cooks, who finished with four catches for 117, including a 45-yard touchdown from Drew Brees in the first quarter, leading the early command.
Brees ended with 8-of-10 for 159 yards and two touchdowns, while Luke McCown also threw for a score.
In the end though it was Jimmy Garoppolo and the Patriots, who came away with the win.
Garoppolo went 28-of-33 for a Week 2 best 269 yards and one interception and a touchdown for New England.
“He threw the ball pretty accurately. A lot different than last week,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick said about Garoppolo.
“There really wasn’t a lot of pressure on the quarterback tonight and that’s always a good thing for the passing game.”
Chris Harper had five catches for 69 yards and caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from Garoppolo to get the Patriots on the scoreboard in the second quarter.
Elsewhere in Week 2, the Philadelphia Eagles crushed the Baltimore Ravens 40-17, Kansas City Chiefs edged Seattle Seahawks 14-13, Buffalo Bills ended 11-10 over the Cleveland Browns and the Dallas Cowboys suffered a 23-6 defeat to the San Francisco 49ers.
