
NEW YORK (Sporting Alert) — Top seeds Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams were among the seeded players securing wins at the U.S. Open at Flushing Meadows, in New York.
The world No. 1 Djokovic of Serbia eased to a three set victory over Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu, following a 6-1, 6-3, 6-0 victory at Ashe Stadium.
Victory for Djokovic sees him setting up a third-round date with American Sam Querrey, who dumped the 28th-seeded Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in his second round match.
Also sealing victory in the second round on men’s side were the fifth-seeded Canadian Milos Raonic, who had a 7-6, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 victory over Germany’s Peter Gojowczyk and Great Britain’s eighth-seeded and 2012 U.S. Open champion Andy Murray, who defeated Matthias Bachinger of Germany, 6-3, 6-3, 6-4.
No. 9 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 10th-seeded Kei Nishikori and 13th-seeded John Isner were also among the winners in the second round on Thursday.
On the women’s side, two-time defending champion Serena Williams punished fellow American Vania King, 6-1, 6-0 in less than an hour at Ashe Stadium.
Moving into the third round as well were third-seeded Petra Kvitova, who eased past Petra Cetkovska, 6-4, 6-2, 16th-seeded Victoria Azarenka, following an easy 6-3, 6-2 victory over Christina McHale and the 11th-seeded Flavia Pennetta, who defeated Shelby Rogers, 6-4, 6-3.
However, eighth-seed Ana Ivanovic was upset 7-5, 6-4 by Karolina Pliskova, while 15-year-old CiCi Bellis had her run at the tournament ended after going down 6-3, 0-6, 6-2 to Zarina Diyas.
Canadian Eugenie Bouchard, the seventh-seed at the tournament, battled to a 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4 win over Sorana Cirstea.
