LONDON, Sporting Alert – Semi-final results from men’s singles at Wimbledon 2016 on Day 12, Friday, July 8.
In the first semi-finals, No. 3 Roger Federer was beaten 6-3 6-7(3) 4-6 7-5 6-3 by No. 6 Milos Raonic in a battling contest on Centre Court.
In the day’s second semi-final on the same court, British number one and tournament second seed Andy Murray defeated Tomas Berdych in straight sets to punch his ticket to final as well.
FIRST SEMIS IN FIVE
Friday’s five-set defeat was Federer’s first loss in 11 trips in Wimbledon semi-finals, as he was unable to outlast the Canadian in the closing sets.
Raonic took the first set, but the Switzerland veteran rallied to take a 2-1 lead heading into a decisive fifth.
However, the seven-time champion was unable to see off the match – losing the last two sets, including the fourth, where Raonic battled back to clinch a 7-5 win.
The defeat ended Federer’s quest to win an eighth Wimbledon title.
“It’s my dream to win an 8th title here. But it’s not the only reason I play tennis,” said Federer.
Federer, who was playing in his 18th championships, last won the Wimbledon title in 2012. He was runner-up in 2014 and 2015.
Meanwhile, Murray, the 2013 champion beat Czech 10th seed Tomas Berdych in straight sets to reach the final and he will start as the favourite.
Murray, who became the tournament favourite the moment defending champion and world number one Novak Djokovic was beaten by Sam Querrey in the early rounds, secured a 6-3 6-3 6-3 victory on Friday to reach his third Wimbledon final.
Wimbledon 2016 final will be on Sunday.
