14th-seeded Mercer upsets 3rd-seeded Duke, 78-71 in March Madness

Raleigh, North Carolina (Sporting Alert, Box Score) — The 14th-seeded Mercer has stunned No. 3 seeded Duke, 78-71 in a drama packed Midwest Region 2nd round game at PNC Arena, Raleigh in North Carolina on Friday.

Trailing Duke (26-9) by five with just over four-minutes to go, the Mercer Bears (27-8), the Atlantic Sun champions, went on an 11-0 run to dump Mike Krzyzewski’s team from the NCAA national tournament.

Jakob Gollon led the way for Mercer with 20 points and five rebounds, while he was very well supported by Daniel Coursey, who had 17 points and four boards in the victory.

Duke depended heavily on their three-point shooting and when it wasn’t happening Mercer made sure to limit any other options for them.

Anthony White Jr. finished with 13 points, while Langston Hall and Ike Nwamu each scored 11 points for the Bears, which ended the game with a 20-8 run.

Quinn Cook paced the Blue Devils with 23 points on 8 of 11 shooting, including 7 of 10 from three-point range, while Rasheed Sulaimon addd 20 in the defeat as Duke went 15 for 37 from behind the arc.

Jabari Parker scored 14 points, while Rodney Hood only scored six points before fouling out late in the game.
