NEW YORK (Sporting Alert) — As expected, Kentucky is the unanimous No. 1 team again in The Associated Press’ Top 25 poll, which was released on Monday.
The Wildcats (21-0, 8-0 SEC), who defeated the Alabama Crimson Tide 70-55 in their last outing over the weekend, are now the only undefeated team left in Division I men’s basketball, following Virginia’s defeat to No. 4 Duke at the weekend as well.
Kentucky, which picked up a pair of wins last week, collected all 65 votes from a media panel and received 1,625 total points to cement its dominance in college basketball this season.
After crushing two opponents last week, Gonzaga (22-1, 10-0 WCC) moved up one place to No. 2 in the poll.
The Bulldogs, who haven’t dropped a game since losing 66-63 in overtime to then-No. 3 Arizona, eased past Portland 64-46 before hammering Memphis, 82-64.
Virginia (19-1, 7-1 ACC), meanwhile dropped one slot to No. 3 in the rankings after suffering its first defeat on the season. The Cavaliers, though, continue to lead the way in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings.
Duke (18-3, 5-3 ACC), despite beating Virginia, stayed at No. 4, while Wisconsin (19-2, 7-1 Big Ten) — is back on track again, after being stunned at Rutgers on Jan. 11, is at No. 5.
Arizona, Villanova, Notre Dame, Kansas and Louisville complete the top 10, while the next five is rounded out by Notre Dame, Iowa State, North Carolina, Utah and Northern Iowa, who moves up from No. 18 after beating Wichita State 70-5.
The Shockers, Maryland, Virginia Commonwealth and Baylor are 16 through 19, with Ohio State back in the poll at No. 20.
Miami, which dropped both games last week and Indiana, which suffered defeats in two of the last three games, both fell out of the rankings this week.
