Rooney, who missed United’s preseason because of injuries, returned to action for England against Scotland in midweek, but manager David Moyes has opted to start with Danny Welbeck, who scored in that game and last year’s top goalscorer Robin van Persie in his attack.

Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic start in the heart of champions’ backline with Patrice Evra and Phil Jones also starting in the back.

Ryan Giggs, Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley and Antonio Valencia are the other outfield players with David de Gea starting between the sticks.

Shinji Kagawa, Anderson and Chris Smalling are all on the bench.

Swansea City, in the meantime, left summer record signing Wilfried Bony on the bench with Michu, Nathan Dyer, Jonjo Shelvey and Wayne Routledge all starting for Michael Laudrup’s side.

Pablo Hernandez and Ki Sung-Yueng are amongst the substitutes.
