KANSAS, Sporting Alert – College basketball scores and results from the AP Top 25 fixtures that took place around the country on Tuesday, December 1.

NO. 9 NORTH CAROLINA 89, NO. 2 MARYLAND 81

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Marcus Paige scored 20 points in his first game of the season to help No. 9 North Carolina beat No. 2 Maryland 89-81 in the college basketball ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Tuesday night.

Paige missed the opening six games of the season with a broken hand, but return Tuesday night to shoot 7-of-12 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from 3-pointers, while finishing with five assists and two steals as well.

“I felt good and I wanted to set the tone with some energy and play hard because I know that is one of the things we have been talking about,” Paige said afterward.

“I got my first shot to go down and that did a lot for me, mentally.

Brice Johnson finished with 16 points and six rebounds, Joel Berry II had 14 points and five assists and Kennedy Meeks had a balanced night with 12 points, six rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks for the Tar Heels (6-1), who led 41-35 at halftime.

Melo Trimble finished with a game-high 23 points and 12 assists to lead the second-ranked Maryland (6-1), which was losing for the first time this season.

Former Duke Blue Devils guard Rasheed Sulaimon scored 18 points and Robert Carter added 11 points, five rebounds and four blocks in the defeat for the Terrapins, who had 22 turnovers and were constantly made to pay for them.

North Carolina, which started the season ranked No. 1 before falling eight places with one defeat, shot 53 percent overall, while going 69 percent from 3-point range.

No. 4 KANSAS 94, LOYOLA 61

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Cheick Diallo made his much-anticipated debut for Kansas on Tuesday and the No. 4 Jayhawks rout Loyola 94-61 in their college basketball fixture at home.

Diallo, who was cleared by the NCAA after a lengthy hold-up because of paperwork, had 13 points, six rebounds and three blocks in 16 minutes in a very busy second half for Kansas (5-1), which outscored the Greyhounds 54-25 after the break.

Wayne Selden Jr. scored 18 points, six rebounds and four assists to lead Kansas, while Perry Ellis added 15 points and six boards in the win.

Frank Mason III had 10 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals and Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk ended with 10 points for the Jayhawks, who used a 15-1 run at the start of the second half to open a big lead.

Eric Laster had 16 points and eight rebounds off the bench to lead Loyola (1-6), with Andre Walker scoring 10 for the Greyhounds (1-6).
