NEW YORK (Sporting Alert) — Roger Federer and Serena Williams were both easy winners in their respective opening round games at the 2014 U.S. Open Tennis tournament at Flushing Meadows in New York on Tuesday.

The second-seeded Federer easily defeated Australia’s Marinko Matosevic to book a second round slot in the men’s singles, after the five-time champion picked up a 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) victory on the second day of competition.
Securing an easy win on Tuesday as well was fourth-seeded David Ferrer of Spain who beat Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia and Herzegovina in four sets, following a 6-1, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 result.
There were wins on the men’s side also for Japan’s No. 10 Kei Nishikori, No. 12 Richard Gasquet of France, 13th-seeded American John Isner, as well as Italy’s Fabio Fognini, the No. 15 seed.
Meanwhile, on the women’s side, two-time reigning U.S. Open champion Serena Williams dominate fellow American Taylor Townsend in her first-round game, despite praising the teen in the build to the contest.
The No. 1 seed cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 victory on Tuesday to secure a second round place.
Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, the third seed at this year’s U.S. Open tournament, defeated Kristina Mladenovic of France, 6-1, 6-0 in her first round game.
Elsewhere, the seventh-seeded Eugenie Bouchard of Canada triumph over Olga Govortsova, 6-2, 6-1, while former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic, the eight-seed her beat Alison Riske, 6-3, 6-0.
