Day 3 U.S. Open Men’s and Women’s Singles Results

NEW YORK (Sporting Alert) — Results and scores from Day three at the 2014 U.S. Open Tennis tournament at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York on Wednesday.

On the men’s side No. 3 seed Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland and the sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych sealed wins, while American Venus Williams and French Open runner-up Simona Halep recorded victories on the women’s side.

However, fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska was dumped from the tournament in the second round after losing 6-3, 6-4 to China’s Peng Shuai.

Second-seed Simona Halep eased past Jana Cepelova, 6-2, 6-1, fifth-seed Maria Sharapova defeated Alexandra Dulgheru, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to book a third round spot, while No. 6 Angelique Kerber beat Alla Kudryavtseva, 6-2, 6-4, No. 9 Jelena Jankovic stopped Tsvetana Pironkova, 7-5, 6-4 and the 10th-seeded Caroline Wozniacki defeated Aliaksandra Sasnovich, 6-3, 6-4.

Also on the women’s side, No. 19 Venus Williams beat Timea Bacsinszky, 6-1, 6-4 to secure a third round slot.

On the men’s side at the U.S. Open, Wawrinka moved into the third round with a 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-1) victory over Thomaz Bellucci, while there were first round wins for No. 6 seed Berdych, who beat veteran Lleyton Hewitt, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 and seventh-seeded Grigor Dimitrov, who earned a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 result over Ryan Harrison.

But the 21st-seeded Sloane Stephens was dumped 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 by Johanna Larsson.
