MANCHESTER, Sporting Alert – Memphis Depay is in line for a recall when Manchester United host Middlesbrough at Old Trafford in a Capital One Cup 4th round clash on Wednesday.

Depay started the season as one of the main selections for manager Louis van Gaal, but a string of unimpressive performances have led to the Dutchman losing his place in the starting lineup.

However, the experienced boss, who worked with the former PSV start during the 2014 World Cup, is  set to hand his fellow countryman another chance to prove himself worthy of a starting place again.

Also expected to be in the starting lineup for Manchester United is Brazilian attacking midfielder Andreas Pereira, who has impressed his manager with his attitude and willingness to learn and adapt to the team’s “philosophy.”

Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini could also get a starting place against Middlesbrough, while Daley Blind could also return to the lineup.

After being an unused substitute on Sunday, England midfielder Michael Carrick is almost certain to start on Wednesday.

Matteo Darmian will come back at right-back for the injured Antonio Valencia.

Valencia, who was forced off the pitch with a foot injury against Manchester City in the EPL derby on Sunday has been ruled out of this contest.

“Valencia is injured – that we could all see,” said van Gaal.

“But I have a lot of players in the ‘red zone’ because we have had a lot of matches and we have a lot of matches to play.

“I have to see if I can use them or not. I have to decide tomorrow [Wednesday]. We need all the days to recover at this moment, so it is difficult to say.”

Striker James Wilson has recovered from illness and could get a rare run-out in the Cup clash.

Luke Shaw (leg), Paddy McNair (liver) and Ashley Young (calf) are also still injured and will not be featuring in this game.
