Georgia Southern Goes For First Win At Massachusetts: Week 8

Georgia Southern football - GA Southern Football

AMHERST, Mass., Sporting Alert — The Georgia Southern football program will aim to win its first game of the season when it takes on fellow winless program Massachusetts in a non-conference game this weekend.

UMass (0-6) and GA Southern (0-5) have combined to play 11 games thus far without any success so the battle at Warren McGuirk Alumni Stadium in Amherst, Mass., couldn’t have come at a better time for both teams.

The game in New England on Saturday will kick-off at 3:30 p.m. ET with Eleven Sports Network providing the live coverage. NESNplus and UMass All-Access will have live stream as well. For Live Stats: Sidearm Sports.

Last time out, the Eagles suffered a 35-27 defeat to New Mexico State on Saturday night with Wesley Fields leading the way for Georgia Southern with 103 yards rushing on 13 carries and a touchdown and sophomore cornerback Monquavion Brinson grabbing two interceptions for the losers as well.

Meanwhile, Massachusetts was on the wrong end of a 58-50 shootout against Ohio last Saturday.

Andrew Ford threw for 390 yards and tied a school record with five touchdown passes for the Minutemen.

Adam Breneman had 131 yards receiving with two touchdowns and Brennon Dingle caught two scoring passes for UMass.

Saturday will see GA Southern and Massachusetts meeting for only the third time with the series locked 1-1.

However, this will be the first meeting since 1999.

Georgia Southern will be hoping to snap a poor run on the road against non-conference teams, having lost 10 straight in that section since beating Florida in The Swamp in 2013.

Meanwhile, another Sun Belt conference team, Arkansas State, will play host to Louisiana at Centennial Bank Stadium in Jonesboro, AR.

The live television broadcast will be on ESPNU with WatchESPN streaming the action, starting at 7:30 p.m. ET.

According to ESPN’s Football Power Index, Arkansas State has a 79.1 percent chance to three straight for the first time campaign.

The Red Wolves (3-2) are coming off a comfortable 51-17 victory over Coastal Carolina on Saturday night.
