Georgia Southern Loses Again; Downed 35-27 By New Mexico State

STATESBORO, Ga., Sporting Alert — Georgia Southern football team remains winless this season after the Eagles suffered their fifth successive defeat of the term on Saturday.

Leading 27-21 at the end of the third quarter, GA Southern failed to hold on to their advantage — conceding 14 straight in the fourth period and went down 35-27 to New Mexico State (3-4, 1-2 Sun Belt).

Both teams traded blows in the opening quarter to end the period 14-14.

Georgia Southern (0-5, 0-2) trailed 21-17 in the second quarter when Dexter Carter Jr. returned a kickoff for a 70-yard touchdown with 4:36 before halftime to give the Eagles a 24-21 lead at the interval.

Tyler Bass kicked a 41-yard field goal to extend his team’s lead to six points, but they failed to score or keep New Mexico State off the scoreboard in the final quarter and fell to another defeat.

Tyler Rogers threw for 382 yards on 31 of 51 completed passes and three touchdowns with two interceptions and ran for another score for the Aggies.

Wide receiver Conner Cramer threw a go-ahead touchdown pass to Bryce Roberts off a lateral early in the fourth quarter and Anthony Muse took five catches for 106 yards to help New Mexico State snap a two-game skid.

Wesley Fields ran for 103 yards on 13 carries with one touchdown, L.A. Ramsby had a scoring reception, while Monquavion Brinson intercepted Rogers twice in the defeat for Georgia Southern.

Georgia Southern head coach Tyson Summers said after the game: “We talked about being able to keep our focus and keep our discipline and that if we are able to do those things and continue to work the way we have with the attitudes we’ve had, then we will keep giving ourselves opportunities to win ball games like we had [Saturday] night.”

GA Southern football returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 21 against UMass.

Game time for this one is set for 3:30 p.m. ET at Warren McGuirk Alumni Stadium in Amherst, MA.
