WACO, Texas (Sporting Alert) — Former World and Olympic 400 meters champion Jeremy Wariner won the men’s 800m race at the 2015 Bobcat Invitational on Texas State Track on Saturday.
Wariner, running in his first ever 800 meters, powered past the field to clock 1:53.02 to win heat two of the event on the day, a time which was the fastest of the four sections, which featured some 34 runners from those heats.
He was hoping to run a little faster, but was satisfied with the overall performance.
“I am not where I want to be. I wanted to be as close to 1:50.00 as possible,” Wariner said in an interview with Flotrack after the race.
The 2004 Athens Olympic Games champions and the IAAF World champion from Helsinki in 2005, has been working on his endurance in past few seasons in an attempt to try to get close his golden days when he was running sub-44 seconds over the 400m.
“I am proud of myself. I stayed with it. I didn’t quit and give up,” he said.
“I had a good finish and that was the main thing for today. To work on my strength.”
Wariner, who is hoping to be in good form for the American trials later on this summer, owns a personal best of 43.45 seconds for the 400m, set in 2007 and 20.19secs for the 200m, which was achieved in 2006.
He is targeting a place on Team USA for the 2015 IAAF World Championships in Beijing.
His best 400m time last season was a 46.01secs — ran at the Ponce Grand Prix in May.
Injuries has been a major problem in past seasons for Wariner, who last ran a sub 45 seconds for the 400m in 2012.
Wariner is set to race over 400m next week at Baylor.
