Van Persie, who also missed the EPL encounter with Cardiff City at ended 2-2 over the weekend, is still to recover fully from a groin injury, while Vidic misses the game with concussion.

Manchester United leads the group with eight-points, one more than Leverkusen (7pts), and manager David Moyes knocks the top spot in the group is still up for grabs.

“The group is very open,” the Man United boss said. “We had a good opportunity at Real Sociedad to defend a good position but [after a 0-0 draw there] we have a big job here in Germany.

“We know it is going to be a hard game tomorrow and we have to do our job so that it doesn’t go to the final game against Shakhtar.”

When these two teams last met, Manchester United won 4-2 at Old Trafford in September, and although he doesn’t expect an easy game, Moyes says his team must get something out of it.

A point will guarantee United’s place in the last 16.

“It’s going to be tough but we have to take points out of this game,” the Scot said.

Misfit midfielder Marouane Fellaini is out as he serves a one-game suspension, Michael Carrick has been ruled out by an Achilles injury, while Phil Jones (groin) and Rafael (ankle) are both doubtful despite traveling with the team.

Victory Wednesday night will seal a last 16 place for Leverkusen as well and their manager Sami Hyypia wants his team to take care of business at home.

“It is an important match for both sides,” Hyypia noted. “But we’re the home team. We have played a lot of good matches here so far, and this is what I expect tomorrow. It won’t be easy for United to win here.

“In Manchester we were a bit frightened to play our game, but since we are at home, we want to show our qualities and play in a more uninhibited way,” the former Liverpool defender said.

“Of course, United have a very good team with a lot of individual quality. We have to work as a team, then we’ll be able to beat them.”

The other game in Group A on Wednesday night comes from Donbass Arena where Shakhtar Donetsk play host to Real Sociedad.

With two games to go, the battle for points heats up, and bottom placed side Real Sociedad (on one point) knows that anything but a win will end their chance of progressing from the group stage.

“You can never lose hope and we believe we are capable of continuing our European campaign,” manager Jagoba Arrasate said. “We will do our best to win in Donetsk.

“The task is simple – to win this game, and then we’ll see. Of course, if we want to succeed, we will need to show something special. I think my team can surprise our opponents, but we’ll need some luck.”

Sociedad will also need some help from Manchester United who must record a victory Leverkusen.

Although they are sitting at the base of the group, Shakhtar manager Mircea Lucescu still believes Sociedad will make life difficult, as they still have a chance to go through.

“I expect a very difficult game, because Real still have a chance to qualify,” said Lucescu. “As for us, except for our game in Leverkusen we have looked good – but making the best use of our scoring chances is our main problem.

“I want my players to play as well as they did at home to Manchester United and Leverkusen, but this time we need some luck,” added Lucescu, who revealed he has a fully fit squad for the contest.
