English Premier League sides, Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham are all in action the England Football League (EFL) Cup fourth round on Tuesday.
Liverpool v Tottenham
In fact, two of these teams, Liverpool and Tottenham, will go head-to-head in an all top-flight clash for a place in the fifth round.
Both managers are set to make changes for this clash, but are still expected to field strong sides for the matchup at Anfield.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is set to recall goalkeeper Simon Mignolet after the Belgian lost his place to summer recruit Loris Karius earlier this season.
Leading midfielder and captain Jordan Henderson misses this EFL Cup game because of suspension.
“Unfortunately I’ll be watching tonight and not contributing because of suspension,” Henderson said.
“I won’t dwell on the topic except to say I’m disappointed in myself that I’ve picked up five bookings so quickly in the season.
“I know the strength of the squad is such that the team will be strong, whichever eleven the manager starts with, but I’m gutted I’m not in contention to play.”
Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino also confirmed that he will rest goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, with the Frenchman to be replaced in the starting lineup by Michel Vorm.
“It’s true, tomorrow we’ll play Michel Vorm,” Pochettino said at his press conference. “I can confirm that to you.
“Hugo is not a machine, he’s one of the best, but not a machine. We have very good goalkeepers like Hugo, Michel, Pau Lopez and the youngsters too and tomorrow is a very good opportunity for Michel because he deserves to play.”
Pochettino also revealed that he is thinking about handing Georges-Kevin Nkoudou a starting place as he rotates his squad.
“Maybe, yes. I’m thinking about giving him the opportunity from the start. Maybe,” the Spurs boss said.
Defender Toby Alderweireld (knee) and striker Harry Kane (ankle) are not yet available for selection.
Arsenal To Mix Youth and Vets In EFL Cup
Fellow English Premier League side Arsenal will take on Reading in an EFL Cup fourth-round tie at Emirates Stadium.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger insisted his club will compete for every competition this season, but noted that he will also give other players the opportunity to play.
“Our challenge is to compete for everything, starting (on Tuesday) in the League Cup,” Wenger said on www. Arsenal.com.
“Even if you see some new faces, our desire is to qualify and fight for everything because I believe we have a squad that is more mature and better equipped to cope with all the challenges we have.
“I am committed to give my best to ensure we are successful at the end of the season.”
This means the likes of youngsters Rob Holding, Chuba Akpom, Jeff Reine-Adelaide and Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who featured in the 4-0 win at Nottingham Forest in the early round, could he trusted again.
Fellow English Premier League side Hull City side Hull City will travel to Bristol City, while Championship leaders Newcastle United play host to Preston North End.
