LONDON, Sporting Alert – Manchester United could once again spend another summer chasing a high-profile Real Madrid player that isn’t interested in going to Old Trafford.
Louis van Gaal and the Red Devils are reportedly ready to push for a deal for Sergio Ramos, who according to the Spanish press, is becoming frustrated with his situation at Santiago Bernabeu.
It is understood Ramos truly wants to stay with Real Madrid, but desires the club to offer him a contract extension with a better financial reward, as the one he now holds expires in 2017.
Manchester United are supposedly in talks with Real over a possible deal for the Spaniard, but the La Liga outfits are not interested in selling their versatile defender.
This could leave Van Gaal and his staff fighting a battle they can’t win this summer – just as former boss David Moyes found out when he tried to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo a few seasons ago.
The Red Devils also went on the hunt to bring Gareth Bale to Old Trafford a year ago and have been heavily linked with the former Tottenham attacker all of last season – but the Wales international had no interest in returning to the Premier League so quickly.
Furthermore, Real Madrid has no intention to sell.
Nevertheless, it could still be a busy summer for Manchester United, with the EPL giants linked with Nicolas Otamendi, Mats Hummels and Ron Vlaar.
It is believed Van Gaal is also “very interested” in signing midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin from Southampton.
The France international, who has been linked with Arsenal and Tottenham as well, recently stated that he would like to play in the Champions League, which signalled his plans to move.
Meanwhile, Sky Sports is reporting that Arsenal is on the verge of signing Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech, while Southampton’s right-back Nathaniel Clyne looks well set to join Liverpool.
According to Sky Sports sources on Friday, Cech is having a medical at Arsenal ahead of completing an £11-million move to Emirates Stadium and former Chelsea assistant manager Ray Wilkins believes he would be a bargain buy for Arsene Wenger.
“I’m extremely surprised and I thought Chelsea might have offloaded him into Europe somewhere,” Wilkins told Sky Sports News HQ.
“He’s been a fantastic servant for the club and the service he’s given the club has been unbelievable.”
In other Premier League transfer news, Liverpool is nearing a deal for England full-back Clyne.
Sky Sports sources say the Reds have had a £12.5m offer agreed by the Saints and Clyne could be a player at Anfield as early as next week.
