MOSCOW — Lionel Messi failed to convert a penalty kick and Argentina drew 1-1 with Iceland in their FIFA World Cup Group D match at Otkrytiye Arena on Saturday.
Wearing the armband, Messi won a took the penalty, but failed to restore his team’s lead when his 64th-minute effort was well saved by Hannes Halldorsson, who picked the correct direction and got two strong hands behind the ball.
Argentina took the lead when scoring in the 19th with a superb finish by Sergio Aguero.
The Manchester City forward whirled away from a defender before firing home a rising left-foot shot.
However, the lead didn’t last too long, as Iceland levelled up the scores four minutes later with a volley from close by Alfred Finnbogason.
Argentina tried desperately hard to find a winning goal, but Iceland used solid defending to frustrate Messi and Argentina en route to picking up a valuable point.
