Peoria, IL — Bradley University will play host to the NCAA Cross Country Midwest Regional this weekend, marking it the sixth time in school history.
Friday’s meet at the Newman Golf Course will bring a number of the country’s top cross country men’s and women’s teams, including Big 12 giants Oklahoma State, to Peoria, Ill, as they seek to win places to the NCAA National Championships.
Several programs from 13 different conferences — including the Atlantic 10, Big 12, Big East, Big Sky, Big 10, Conference USA, Horizon League, Mid-American, Missouri Valley, Ohio Valley, Summit League, Southeastern and Western Athletic Conferences — will do battle at Newman Golf Course to compete for an automatic spot in the NCAA Championship which will be held Saturday, Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, Ind.
Oklahoma State, which won the men’s team title at the Big 12 championships, head into the Midwest Regional meet ranked No. 1 again and the Cowboys are confident and “ready to go.”
“Going into the regional meet, we’re ranked No. 1 [in the region], as we have been all year. The guys are ready to go,” assistant coach Bobby Lockhart said on the school’s website. “Big 12s were really our first test of seeing kind of where guys placed on the team, determining the team going into the regional championships, and deciding who we’re going to race in our top seven spots at the national championships.
“The guys look good. They’re actually doing a workout today and should be ready to go. With the women, we had an alright meet at the conference championships, but we’re looking to bounce back.
“We’ve strung together a couple of good workouts, and they’re looking really, really good, so we’ll be looking to qualify both teams on Friday.”
Bradley and Newman Golf Course, which have served as hosts for NCAA Regionals in 2010, 2007, 2004, 1996 and 1986, are hosting the meeting for the fourth time in an 11-year span.
At the end of the meet, the top two teams and top four individuals not included on those squads will receive automatic spots from the Midwest Regional to the NCAA Championship.
At-large teams and individuals will be announced following the completion of all nine NCAA Regional championships.
