South Bend, IN (Sporting Alert) — No. 2 Florida State and an inspired No. 30 Columbia University cross country teams, captured women’s and men’s Blue Races at Friday’s Notre Dame Invitational meeting.
The second ranked Florida State posted two top ten finishers, Colleen Quigley (2nd in 16:51.98) and Hannah Walker (4th in 17:05.13) on their way to winning the meet with a an overall team score of 77points to take their fourth Notre Dame Invitational team title in six years.
New Mexico, with three runners in the top 15, scored 82 points for second place, while San Francisco (96), BYU (187) and Princeton (201) completed the top five finishers, with the hosts, Notre Dame taking sixth.
However, No. 4 Duke University, racing without a few of their regulars who are sick, was only 10th, despite, Juliet Bottorff winner the individual 5K crown in a time of 16:43.59.
While Bottorff came home easily, her fellow scoring teammates struggled to 25, 59 and 113 and 116, paving the way for Florida State to win the meet and take third consecutive team title at the annual meet.
“We squeaked out the win and we were a little lucky,” said FSU coach Karen Harvey. “Colleen came from way back.
“I think she was a little worried early, started sniffing some people and came really hard at the end. Hannah worked really hard and pushed the pace. I wasn’t unhappy with her race at all.
It must be noted that the Blue Devils were without the freshman standouts Wesley Frazier and Hannah Meier, who were two of the team’s top-three front runners from the Adidas XC Challenge.
“It’s certainly disappointing that a few of our kids are sick and won’t get a chance to compete,” head coach Kevin Jermyn revealed before the meet on Friday.
On the men’s side, Columbia came out on top after scoring 113 points, beating No. 7 University of Tulsa (124) and No. 9 Princeton University (147).
Anthony Rotich of UTEP won the individual 8K title with a time of 24:18.30.
