NEW YORK (Sporting Alert) — Results from Day 7 at the U.S. Open Tennis tournament – men’s and women’s singles at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.
Recording third round victories in men’s singles were the No. 2-seeded Roger Federer and the No. 6-seeded Tomas Berdych, but the fourth-seeded David Ferrer of Spain was upset by Frenchman Gilles Simon, the No. 26th seed.
Switzerland star Federer picked up a 4-6 6-1 6-1 6-1 victory over Granollers of Spain, while Czech Republic’s Berdych beat Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili, 6-3 6-2 6-4 in his U.S. Open third round contest.
Fourth-seed Ferrer was shocked 6-3 3-6 6-1 6-3 by Simon.
Another seeded player losing in the third round is Spain’s No. 19 seed Feliciano Lopez, who was dumped by Dominic Thiem of Austria, 6-4 6-2 6-3.
On the women’s side, meanwhile, fifth-seed Maria Sharapova of Russia was beaten, 6-4 2-6 6-2 by Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, while the 13th-seeded Sara Errani (Italy) eased past Mirjana Lucic-Baroni (Croatia), 6-3 2-6 6-0.
