LONDON, Sporting Alert – English Premier League scores on Monday, January 2, with Manchester United and Manchester City both picking up victories to stay in the title race.
MANCHESTER UNITED WIN AGAIN
At the London Stadium, goals from Juan Mata and Zlatan Ibrahimovic led Manchester United to a 2-0 win over 10-man West Ham United.
The Hammers started the game brightly but quickly suffered a setback after forward Sofiane Feghouli was controversially sent off by referee Mike Dean for a dangerous tackle on Manchester United defender Phil Jones.
Both players went hard for a ball in which Jones got to first and was hit hard by Feghouli and after about 30 seconds of thinking, Dean dismissed the West Ham player.
The goals, however, didn’t come until after the break.
MATA, IBRA DOES IT FOR JOSE
Second half substitutes Marcus Rashford and Mata combined to put Manchester United ahead in the 63rd minute.
After picking up a key pass from Michael Carrick, Rashford got to the byline and then cut back a pass for Mata, who swipes it home into the corner.
Ibrahimovic then settled Jose Mourinho’s nerves with a second, blasting home from close range after West Ham failed to properly clear a ball from inside their own area.
MANCHESTER CITY GET KEY WIN
At the Etihad Stadium, 10-man Manchester City came alive in the second half to beat Burnley 2-1.
In another game that involved a sending off, the Citizens had midfielder Fernandinho dismissed for a poor tackle in the 32nd minute.
Sergio Aguero and David Silva were both injected into the game at halftime and they both made a difference.
However, it was Gael Clichy, who got the hosts off the mark when the full-back found the bottom corner in the 58th minute from just outside the box.
Aguero made it 2-0 with a stunning finish in the 62nd minute – squeezing home his shot off the post from a remarkable tight angle.
Burnley grabbed a consolation in the 70th minute when Ben Mee fired home a shot that went in off the inside of the bar.
OTHER PREMIER LEAGUE WINNERS
Everton and West Brom also secured three points in the English Premier League on Monday.
In action at Goodison Park, Enner Valencia (73) Leighton Baines 81 (pen) and Romelu Lukaku (89) all got on the scoresheet for Everton to thrash Southampton.
West Brom came from a goal down to beat relegation-threatened Hull City 3-1 at the Hawthorns.
Robert Snodgrass game the Tigers a 21st-minute lead and held the lead at halftime.
But Chris Brunt (49), Gareth McAuley (62) and James Morrison (73) struck in the second half to secure the win for the home side.
