LIVERPOOL (Sporting Alert) — Forward Gareth Bale and defender Sergio Ramos have been ruled out of Real Madrid’s Champions League Group B clash with Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday.
Bale did not feature for Real Madrid in their 5-0 victory over Levante on Saturday, despite being named on the bench, after he reportedly picked up an injury while on international duty last week.
“After tests carried out on Gareth Bale by the Real Madrid Sanitas medical services, he has been diagnosed with a muscular injury in the right piriformis muscle,” a Real Madrid statement read on Monday.
Manager Carlo Ancelotti did not include Bale in his 21 squad for the clash with Liverpool and after discussions with the team’s medical staff.
He is now also a doubt for this weekend’s high-profiled ‘El Clasico’ La Liga clash with leaders Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.
The absence of the speedy winger for the match at Anfield will come as a massive relief for Liverpool, but Reds manager Brendan Rodgers will be mindful that there are other attacking threats.
Karim Benzema is back with the team, while on form forward Cristiano Ronaldo, James Rodriguez and Isco are also in the traveling squad.
On loan Manchester United forward Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez is also available for this contest, but will start on the bench.
Also missing the clash will be Spanish defender Ramos, who is suffering from a calf injury that forced him out of the weekend’s game as well.
Ramos was left of the traveling squad for the Liverpool clash and is also being monitored for Saturday’s ‘El Clasico.’
