PARIS, Sporting Alert – Cristiano Ronaldo has had some fierce battles with Lionel Messi on the pitch, but when it’s all said and done, the Portugal captain admits that watching his long-term foe cry isn’t nice for him to see.
Ronaldo was speaking about Messi’s tears of disappointment, after he missed his penalty kick and watched Argentina lose once again to Chile in a shootout in the final of the Copa America last month.
Immediately after that defeat, Messi announced his retirement from international football, but Ronaldo hopes the Barcelona forward will have a change of heart and return to his national setup in the near future.
Football supporters, current players and even past legends of the game, including the Argentine football legend Diego Maradona, as well as the country’s president, Mauricio Macri, would like to see Messi back.
Ronaldo is hoping for the samething.
“He’s taken a tough decision and people must understand it,” Ronaldo said, according to AS, speaking ahead of Portugal’s clash with Wales,
The Real Madrid forward added that seeing long-term rival Messi in tears did not make him feel happy either.
“Messi isn’t used to defeats or disappointments: not even finishing second. Missing a penalty doesn’t make you a bad player,” he said.
“It’s not nice seeing Messi in tears and I hope he returns to the national side.”
