KINGSTON, Jamaica (Sporting Alert) — Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce will start the overwhelming favourite to win the women’s 200 metres dash on Sunday at the Jamaica Track and Field Trials to select the team for the IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia later this summer.
Fraser-Pryce, who had already earned a spot in the 100m after winning the Diamond League series last year, is the fastest qualifier from the semi-finals over the half-lap event after winning her heat in 22.64 seconds.
Her training partners Sherone Simpson (22.85) and Anneisha McLauglin (22.88) were the other semi-finals heat winners and they will be hoping to keep their form going into tonight’s final.
On the men’s side, Nickel Ashmeade qualified the quickest with a swift 20.07secs, after beating Olympic Games bronze medallist Warren Weir, who came home in 20.27.
Also looking good from the semis was Jason Young, who posted 20.39 to win his heat, with the third semi-finals going to Rasheed Dwyer, who ran an impressive 20.23 to beat Jason Livermore (20.46).
Other highlighted finals on Sunday are the men’s and women’s 400m dashes.
Javere Bell has the best time heading into the men’s 400m final with a 45.26 performance, with 18-year-old high school star Javon Francis and Rusheen McDonald (45.69) winning the other semis.
Stephenie Ann McPherson ran 50.16 to be the quickest qualifier from the women’s 400m semi-finals, with Novlene Williams-Mills (50.95) the next best on the list.
