Southampton Hold Arsenal 1-1: English Premier League Score

Sporting Alert -- Olivier Giroud climb off the bench to score a late equaliser and Arsenal shared the points with hosts Southampton in a 1-1 draw on Sunday.

The Gunners were beaten 3-1 by Manchester United at the Emirates last weekend and are hoping to return to winning ways in the league, but things started the wrong way for the visitors.

Southampton scored early to take a 1-0 lead at halftime in the English Premier League clash at St. Mary's Stadium.

The home side jumped out in front in the third minute when Dusan Tadic picked up a loose ball and found Charlie Austin to finish.

Arsenal captain Per Mertesacker, who was recalled to the side, gave the ball away and then Tadic beats him easily before sliding in Austin, who stayed onside to tuck home past Petr Cech for 1-0.

The Saints continued to press the Gunners, but they were unsuccessful at grabbing another goal before halftime.

Arsene Wenger replaced Alexandre Lacazette with fellow Frenchman Giroud and the latter popped up to glance home a header into the far corner off a cross from Alexis Sanchez in the 88th minute.

Arsenal made just one change to the side that fell 3-1 at home to Manchester United last weekend for today's clash at Southampton.

Center-back and captain Per Mertesacker comes in to replace the injured Shkodran Mustafi.

Mertesacker will partner Laurent Koscielny in the heart of the backline.

Manager Arsene Wenger has once again started with Alexandre Lacazette at the tip of his attack with Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez in support.

Jack Wilshere, Olivier Giroud, Alex Iwobi, Danny Welbeck and Francis Coquelin are among the substitutes.

Meanwhile, Southampton made four changes from the team that drew 1-1 at Bournemouth last time out.

Coming into the starting lineup are captain Maya Yoshida, Jack Stephens, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Nathan Redmond, with Jeremy Pied, Wesley Hoedt, Steven Davis and Sofiane Boufal all dropping to the bench.

The Saints have decided to play with a three-man backline with Yoshida and Stephens joining Virgil van Dijk in defense.

Redmond will link up with Dusan Tadic in support of Charlie Austin, while Hojbjerg starts next to Oriol Romeu in midfield.
