By:OMAR HALL Published on: October 1, 2013 6:14 pm Leave a Comment

(Sporting Alert) — Details on Matchday 2 on October 1 of the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League group stages. Results and goal scorers are also listed with each game that was played on Tuesday night.

There were wins on the night for Arsenal and Chelsea, who looked very impressive on the night, while 10-man Zenit struggled at home against Austria Wien in a dull and disappointing 0-0 draw.

After the win Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger said: “I am delighted of course because it was a very enjoyable game tonight with a fantastic first half, played at a great pace with belief, authority in our game, great finishing, great movement.

“Overall, that’s the game we want to see. The second half was a bit more handbrake-ish, a bit more cautious, but we played more not to make a mistake than to score.

“But in patches, when we went forward, you could see that the third goal was there if we really went for it.”

Ozil, who has been very impressive for Arsenal since his move to London, keeps his place in the starting side, as manager Arsene Wenger opted to play the same team that beat Marseille in the Champions League group opener in midweek.

This means that striker Olivier Giroud, who had been struggling with a minor knock has passed fit to play, while the on form Aaron Ramsey, Theo Walcott and Jack Wilshere all start as well.

At the sometime, Mikel Arteta returns and has taken a place on the bench as he continues his comeback from injury. Also on the bench is striker Nicklas Bendtner.

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes has named striker Marko Arnautovic in his starting team and he plays alongside Kenwyne Jones, after replacing Matthew Etherington in the only change from the side that drew 0-0 with Manchester City the last time out.

Peter Crouch remains on the bench, but will certainly play some part as the game progresses.

LONDON (Sporting Alert) — Mesut Ozil made his mark in the English Premier League (EPL) after setting up a goal for Arsenal in their 3-1 win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

There were also wins for Manchester United, Tottenham, Newcastle United and Everton on the day.

In the Arsenal game, Ozil, who moved to the London club on deadline day, setup  striker Olivier Giroud for Arsenal’s opening goal for the contest.

Labeled as the “assist king” the German international sweetly took down a long ball played down the left hand side with his left foot before putting in a well weighted low cross for Giroud to smash home into the corner past Keiren Westwood in the 11th minute.

After the half-time break, Sunderland made one change, bringing Craig Gardner and with his first touch the midfielder fired home his home side’s equalizer from the penalty spot, after Laurent Koscielny was adjudged to have fouled Adam Johnson.

However, Aaron Ramsey scored a second half brace to seal the win for Arsenal to move to the top of the EPL standings on goal difference.

At White Hart Lane, Christian Eriksen delivered two superb passed for Gyfli Sigurdsson to score both goals as Tottenham beat Norwich 2-0.

Sigurdsson fired home from close ranged to give Spurs a 1-0 half-time lead.

He doubled his team’s lead in the 49th minute after Eriksen and Paulinho combined to set him up for his second of the game.

At Villa Park, Newcastle United beat Aston Villa 2-1.

Hatem Ben Arfa nicely slotted home from close range to give the visitors the lead in the 18th minute, while Yoan Gouffran grabbed the winner in the 73rd minute.

This was after in form striker Christian Benteke had equalised for Aston Villa in the 67th.

At Fulham, Steve Sidwell fired his team into the lead in the 22nd minute against West Browmwich, after a corner kick, but the travelers grabbed a late equalising goal through  Gareth McAuley.

There was also a 1-1  draw between the newly promoted sides, Hull City and Cardiff City.

Earlier goals from Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney guided Manchester United to a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace.

In the late game, Steven Naismith’s header just before half-time piloted Everton to a shocking 1-0 win over Chelsea.

Manchester City and Stoke City ended 0-0.

Arsenal agree deal for Real Madrid midfielder Mesut Ozil

By:JAMES ANDERSON Published on: September 2, 2013 7:10 am Leave a Comment

LONDON (Sporting Alert) — Arsenal got the deadline day activity off to a bright start by agreeing a fee with Real Madrid to sign midfield playmaker Mesut Ozil, according to Press Association Sport.

The English Premier League side has been silent in the market thus far this summer with manager Arsene Wenger claiming he will not be spending any crazy money on one player.

However, it is believed that the bid for Ozil was a club-record bid of 50million euros (£42.2m).

It is understood that the 24-year-old German is now having a medical in Germany for the EPL side after he discussed personal terms ahead the proposed transfer move to the Emirates.

Ozil had been linked with moves to Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City but it now seems he will be making a move to join Wenger and the Gunners.

Another Real Madrid player, Angel Di Maria is also on the Arsenal radar.

It is believed that Wenger is also working hard on landing a few more signing with a striker parts of his plans after he had moves for Gonzalo Higuain, Luis Suarez and Wayne Rooney knocked back.

Arsenal are also still interested in signing Newcastle United midfielder Yohan Cabaye.
