Top 25 College Men’s Basketball Rankings -Week 7: Dec. 21

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL, Sporting Alert – Michigan State remains No. 1 in the last AP Top 25 College Men’s Basketball Rankings on Monday, 21 December.

The Spartans (12-0) are still undefeated this season and collected their 12th successive victory last week with a battle 78-58 win at Northeastern.

Michigan State collected 64 of the 65 first-place votes for 1,623 points as it continues to pace the rest of the country.

However, the Big Ten outfits are reporting that star forward Denzel Valentine will be out of action for 2-3 weeks after a minor arthroscopic knee surgery.

According to Michigan State sports information director Matt Larson, a tiny chip of cartilage came loose in Valentine’s left knee, which led to doctors deciding to go and clean it up.

Valentine, who leads Michigan State in points, rebounds and assists per game this season with average figures of 18.5 points, 8.3 rebounds and 7.1 assists — is set to miss 3-4 games with the injury.

While the senior forward sits on the sidelines, the nation’s top-ranked team will surely be tested, with games against Oakland, Iowa, Minnesota and Illinois to come during that period.

Valentine will certainly be missed, as his skills on the season thus far, have him floating around the top of the list as one of the early leading candidates for national player of the year.

Meanwhile, Kansas (9-1), which collected the other first-place vote, remains No. 2 in the AP Top 25 College Men’s Basketball Rankings this week, with Oklahoma (8-0) staying at No. 3.

Maryland (10-1) is back in the top five this week — moving two places up to No. 4, with Virginia (9-1) up three spots to No. 5.

Undefeated Xavier (11-0) is up four spots to No. 6, North Carolina (9-2) also climbed two slots to No. 7, with Arizona (11-1) at No. 8 after moving up five places.

Butler (9-1) is up eight-places to No. 9, while Providence (11-1) completes the top 10.

Kentucky and Duke both fell heavily after losing at the weekend. The pair were the biggest fallers in the AP Top 25 College Men’s Basketball Rankings in Week 7.

The Wildcats (9-2) dropped from fourth to No. 12 after losing 74-67 to Ohio State, while the Blue Devils (9-2) are at No. 15 after falling to Utah, 77-75.

UCLA 22 and Connecticut 25 both fell out of dropped from rankings this week.
