Brazilian Diego came on to replace leading striker Diego Costa, who was forced off with a hamstring injury after 29 minutes and he went on to give Atletico Madrid the lead with a stunning 30 yards strike in the 56th minute of the game.

However, Barcelona grabbed an equaliser 15 minutes later from another Brazilian forward, Neymar, who finished off a well timed pass by midfield playmaker Andres Iniesta.

The 1-1 score on Tuesday night marked the fourth successive draw between the two Spanish La Liga sides this season.

“We were expecting this kind of game,” said Barcelona midfielder Xavi after the game.

“We had the majority of possession and chances but they did a good job, worked very hard and managed to score a great goal.

“This is not a good result but we will look to win the second leg.”
