SPORTING ALERT – CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying fourth round results from Tuesday night, Nov. 17. Mexico, Jamaica and Costa Rica all won on the road.
In San Pedro Sula, Honduras, Mexico tagged the hosts 2-0, courtesy of two second-half goals from substitutes.
After holding the group leaders scoreless past the hour mark at the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano, Honduras’ resistance finally broke in the 67th minute with a brilliant strike from Jesus Corona before Jurgen Damm added a second less than 10 minutes later
Corona, a 61st-minute substitute for Javier Aquino, broke the deadlock with a stunning strike from just inside the penalty area after he picked up a clearance from a free-kick played inside the box.
After the clearance fell to him, the talented 22-year-old flicked the ball up with his left foot past a defender before firing home a right-footed volley shot past goalkeeper Noel Valladares from 17 yards out.
Seven minutes later, Damm, who entered the field for Javier Hernández in the 70th minute, made it 2-0.
The midfielder finished very well from a tight angle in the 72nd minute, just when goalkeeper Valladares was anticipating a pass across the face of the goal.
Mexico now leads Group B with maximum six points.
Meanwhile, Jamaica rebounded from their opening CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying fourth round defeat to Panama with a 1-0 victory over Haiti in Group B.
Both teams squandered several chances to take the lead in the game, but the Reggae Boyz grabbed the all-important goal of the competition through Clayton Donaldson in the 63rd minute.
A corner kick played inside the box was well met by Birmingham City forward Donaldson with a well placed and paced header.
Jobi McAnuff also forced a brilliant save from Johnny Placide in the late stages of the game, while Haiti fired several chances over the crossbar with just the goalkeeper to beat.
In the meantime, Bryan Ruiz and Marco Urea grabbed goals in a two-minute span to lead Costa Rica to a 2-1 win over Panama in another Group B battle.
In Group C, USA and Trinidad and Tobago finished scoreless in Port-of-Spain, while Guatemala hammered Saint Vincent and the Grenadines 4-0 in the other game.
El Salvador and Canada finished 0-0 in Group A.
