No. 1 New Mexico Dominate Wisconsin Invite: Results

MADISON, Wis., Sporting Alert – No. 1 New Mexico dominated the women’s race en route to victory at the 2015 Wisconsin adidas Invitational at Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course on Friday.

The Lobos followed the instructions of head coach Joe Franklin and ran close together, as they placed five of the top 10 finishers in the women’s 6k, with senior Courtney Frerichs leading the way with a fourth-place overall finish in 19:39.

Rhonda Auckland (19:41), Calli Thackery (19:42) and Alice Wright (19:43) finished fifth through seventh, while Molly Renfer (19:55) who also cracked the sub-20 minute barrier, placed 10th.

In the team race, the top-ranked New Mexico tallied a meet record 32-points – beating second-placed No. 11 Arkansas (186) by 154 points.

Third was No. 17 Virginia with 215 points, with the top five completed by No. 12 North Carolina State (238) and No. 3 Providence (262).

No. 6 Boise State was sixth at the meet after collecting 271 points, with No. 8 Iowa State (279), No. 10 Washington (290), No. 22 BYU (314) and No. 16 Penn State (347) rounding out the top 10 finishers behind New Mexico.

Freshman Allie Ostrander of Boise State captured the women’s individual 6k crown in meeting record 19:19.

Molly Seidel of Notre Dame was second in 19:22, with Arkansas’ Dominique Scott getting third in 19:32.

SECOND-RANKED ORANGE DEFEND TITLE

On the men’s side, No. 2 Syracuse ran smartly through the opening parts of the race before quickening things up through the final 2k en route to scoring 101 points to defend their team title.

The Orange had three finishers in the top 10.

No. 9 BYU tallied 186 points for second place, with No. 9 Michigan finishing third with 218 points.

Completing the top five were No. 7 Virginia (238) and No. 5 Iona (268).

Completing the top 10 were No. 24 Furman (310), No. 17 NC State (311), Tulsa (327), No. 20 UCLA (334) and No. 28 Columbia (361).

On the individual side of things, Tulsa’s Marc Scott took home the men’s 8k crown with a time of 23:35.0, after just edging Justyn Knight of Syracuse, who finish at 23:35.8.

Stanford’s Sean McGorty stopped the clock at 23:36.2 for third place.

Rounding out the top five individual finishers in the men’s event were, Martin Hehir (23:36.9) and Malachy Schrobilgen (23:37.2) of Wisconsin.
