Rashford, Martial Guide Manchester United Into Carabao Cup 4th Round

MANCHESTER, Sporting Alert — Marcus Rashford scored twice and Anthony Martial delivered a Man of the Match performance and Manchester United eased into the Carabao Cup fourth-round with a 4-1 win over Burton Albion on Wednesday.

Rashford opened the scoring in the 5th minutes with a brilliant finish over the advancing Connor Ripley in the Burton Albion goal before doubling the score with a stunning finish 12-minutes later.

Jesse Lingard made it 3-0 in the 36th minute after his effort took a nasty deflection and send Ripley the wrong way.

After the break, Manchester United grabbed a fourth goal when Rashford played through Martial on the hour mark.

The Frenchman played the full 90 minutes and looked lively throughout the game — earning himself the Man of the Match honor over Rashford.

“Anthony Martial wanted to do things today,” Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho told Sky Sports after the match.

“Some of them he did amazingly well, others not so well, but he was always trying and that commitment and happiness on the pitch is always important.”

Lingard added about the France international: When he is running at you, your defenders are on the back foot. If he continues to do that throughout this season he’ll be a force.”

“The players, many of them, needed 90 minutes to play because many of them were not playing a lot during the season. I think we did our job professionally.”

Burton Albion grabbed a consolation goal in the final seconds of time added on through Lloyd Dyer after the Red Devils failed to deal with a cross inside the box that initially came off the crossbar.

“We did our job. Not a phenomenal performance but a solid performance,” Mourinho said. “Since the beginning, we played in a serious way.

The Red Devils are the defending champion and Mourinho said the tournament is once again an important competition for his team this season.

“If the competition is an official competition then it is important for Manchester United and for me as a manager,” the Portugal coach revealed.

Manchester United moved on and will travel to Wales to take on Swansea City in the fourth round of the tournament, which resumes on the week of Oct. 23.

“But we have this competition, we have to respect the sponsors, we have to respect the opponents and a lot of us are trying to do our best.”
