EUGENE, Ore. Jun 25, Sporting Alert — Trayvon Bromell flashed to a collegiate record of 9.84 seconds when winning his 100m heat at the USATF Outdoor Championships here in Eugene, Thursday evening.

The Baylor University sophomore and World Junior record holder, also improved his own personal best with Thursday’s performance, while clocking the second fastest time on the day.

Remontay McClain posted the fastest time of the day at 9.82 seconds, but achieved his mark in a heavy +4.9 m/s traveling wind when beating Tyson Gay (9.85) in the third heat.

Bromell’s time was done in a legal +1.3 m/s wind.

It was a sad evening for sprinter Ryan Bailey though after he false-started in his heat and failed to make it past the first round.

The wind affected most of the times on the day, as Carmelita Jeter and Jasmine Todd of Oregon both ran 10.87 with the assistance of a powerful +4.5 tailwind.

Tianna Bartoletta, Jenna Prandini, English Gardner, Jeneba Tarmoh, Tori Bowie and Dezerea Bryant all booked places in the semis.

LaShawn Merritt was the quickest around the track in the heats of the men’s 400m dash at the USATF Outdoor Championships here in Eugene, Thursday evening.

Merritt, who won the world title at the 2013 championships in Moscow, Russia, and doesn’t need to qualify, opted to carry over his midweek training session to Hayward Field to test his fitness against a quality field in the heats.

In the end, the 28-year-old finished first in 44.95 seconds and was the only runner this evening to break the 45-seconds barrier.

Bryshon Nellum and Michael Berry also looked good when they finished behind Merritt in 45.12 and 45.13, respectively.

Other heat winners on the day were David Verburg, who posted 45.20 to take the first race, while Marcus Chambers of Oregon finished super fast to land the third heat in 45.27.

NCAA champion Vernon Norwood from LSU was the winner of the fourth heat in 45.49, with the fifth and final heat going to James Harris, at 45.64.

Former World and Olympic gold medal winner Jeremy Wariner was third in heat five in 45.74 and he also booked a place in the semi-finals.

In the women’s race, world-leader Francena McCorory and Quanera Hayes both looked pretty good in their respective heats.

McCorory pulled no punches when winning her race in a quick 51.25secs, with Hayes taking her heat in 51.31.

Allyson Felix, who has a wild card in the 200m, continued her endurance work with an impressive 51.40 on her way to finishing first in heat one.

Elsewhere in the women’s 400m, Sanya Richards-Ross made easy work of her heat when winning in 51.93, while Natasha Hastings raced home behind Hayes in heat two in a quality time of 51.44.

In the women’s 800m, Ajee’ Wilson was a very relaxed 2:01.96 heat winner and she was the fastest of the heats on the day.

Joining her in the semi-finals are the likes of Alysia Montano (2:02.00) and Brenda Martinez (2:02.33).

In the men’s 400m hurdles, NCAA champion Michael Stigler won his heat in a wind-affected 49.66, with Jeshua Anderson (49.80), Quincy Downing (49.95), Bershawn Jackson (49.96) and Johnny Dutch (50.43) going through as well.

Brianna Rollins wins women’s 100m hurdles at U.S. trials

DES MOINES, Iowa (Sporting Alert) – Brianna Rollins signed off Saturday’s third day of action at the U.S. Track & Field Championships with a sizzling 12.26 seconds (+1.2 m/s) to win the women’s 100-meter hurdles – flashing to a new American record at Drake Stadium.

Rollins had looked very impressive in the early rounds, but her winning time in the final came as a surprised to everyone, including the runner herself.

“I just came out here and tried to focus on my own lane. I was just so overwhelmed and so emotional, it’s just all amazing. I just thank God,” she said.

Rollins’ performance, which is just outside the world record of 12.21, is the third fastest time ever, but she says it wasn’t something she was thinking about.

“I didn’t,” the hurdler said when asked if she was thinking about breaking the American record. “I don’t ever think about times or records or anything.

“I just come out here and feel blessed.”

Finishing second to Rollins was Queen Harrison, who ran 12.43, while third went to Nia Ali in 12.48.

Lolo Jones stopped the clock at 12.55 for fifth place.

LaShawn Merritt delivered another solid run to win the men’s 400m title, running 44.21 to finish ahead of former national champion Tony McQuay (44.74) and Arman Hall (45.01).

“I wanted to come in and execute my race,” Merritt said. “That is what I did. I was confident from my race yesterday. I came in and ran my own race.”

Natasha Hastings raced away with the women’s title and did delivered a sub-50 seconds timing, just as I had predicted on Saturday, prior to the race.

She clocked 49.94 to beat Francena McCorory, who ran a personal best of 50.01 for second. The important third place position went to Illinois’s NCAA champion Ashley Spencer (50.58).

“I knew it was going to be a tight race, and a great race, I couldn’t focus on anything else,” said Hastings after the tough victory.

“I had to focus on myself, on my race plan. All the things I have been working for. This is actually my first victory in the open 400 all season.”

But it was a very disappointing championships for Olympic champion Sanya Richards-Ross, who finished 6th and failed to make the team for the open event.

Michael Tinsley showed that he saved his best race for the finals of the men’s 400m hurdles after running a world-leading 47.96 to beat Kerron Clement (48.06) and Bershawn Jackson (48.09) to the title.

Elsewhere on Saturday, 17-year-old Mary Cain ran 4:28.76 to take second in the women’s 1500m and earned a place on the American team to Moscow. The event was won by Treniere Moser, who just outpaced Cain in the closing metres to take the win in 4:28.62.

Michelle Carter, in the meantime, won the women’s Shot Put event with an American record of 20.24m, a mark she established in the fifth round of the competition.

“It felt good (to get the record), Carter said. “We’ve been training for a peak this time of year. This is like a small one and then we’ll see what happens.

“I’ve been working really hard trying to put everything together and get ready for Russia.”

The first round of the men’s and women’s 200m also went off with Tyson Gay and Allyson Felix amongst the qualifiers for the semifinals.

Of course the main attention will come from the sprinting events on both sides, especially with the likes of Justin Gatlin, Tyson Gay, Allyson Felix, Sanya Richards-Ross and Carmelita Jeter in their respective line-ups.

However, there should be some highlighted moments in the distance events as well, particularly in the women’s women 1500m and 5000m, where a certain prodigy Mary Cain, a Junior at Bronxville High, stands a glorious chance of making the team in both events.

The 17-year-old is being coached by world renowned long/middle distance coach Alberto Salazar and he also backs her to make the world championship team for Moscow, Russia.

Her goal is the 1500m, which she covered in 4:04.62 this season, but Salazar also wants her to race in the 5,000m, where she has a personal best of 15:45.46 – should something goes wrong in her main race.

In the meantime, 2004 Olympic champion Jeremy Wariner will be hoping to find his best form this season at the trial as he seeks to win a place on the men’s 400m team.

Wariner has been struggling this year will need to overcome his sluggish campaign to beat out the likes of Bryshon Nellum, LaShawn Merritt, Tony McQuay and Manteo Mitchell.

The men’s 5000m will have Galen Rupp and Chris Derrick, who will both race in the men’s 10,000m as well, in addition to Bernard Lagat.

Felix has been scratched from the women’s 100m, as she’s yet to master the event and will concentrate on just running her specialty, the 200m, while Jeter, who has been battling with injury problems this season, will only race in the 100m.

World champion Jason Richardson came home strong to take second place in a personal best also of 12.98, while Jeffrey Porter lowered his best mark to take third in 13.08.

Antwon Hicks was fourth in 13.14, with Oliver left back in fifth in 13.17.
