Van Persie has been recovering from the groin injury he picked up several weeks ago, but is still not fully fit for this contest and manager David Moyes as opted to keep resting the Dutch striker.
So Wayne Rooney will continue to lead the attack with Shinji Kagawa playing the supporting role in his favourite position just behind the striker, after impressing in the Champions League win at Bayer Leverkusen in midweek.
Danny Welbeck comes in for Nani on the left wing, Tom Cleverley replaces Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand out and captain Nemanja Vidic back from a concussion.
Manchester United boss Moyes said: “I don’t know how much difference Spurs losing 6-0 to City makes, I can only concentrate on Manchester United. We’ve got a big squad and we try to use the players at the right time.”
Tottenham boss André Villas-Boas has decided to hand Nacer Chadli a starting place, while Roberto Soldado has been trusted again to lead the attack, despite his struggles to score goals.
Sandro, Paulinho, Aaron Lennon and Mousa Dembele all start as well in midfield for Tottenham, who are hoping to recover from the 6-0 hammering at Manchester City last weekend in their last English Premier League outing.
Tottenham manager Villas-Boas says: “The squad needs a response. We are here to do our job, which is to achieve Champions League qualification, and that is not decided in December. We are very focused on what we have to do.”
