Video: LA Galaxy 0, Manchester United 7

(SportingAlert) — New manager Louis van Gaal Manchester United kick-off his campaign to the best possible start after the English Premier League side rolled past the Los Angeles Galaxy 7-0 in a preseason friendly on Wednesday night.

Wayne Rooney, Ashley Young and youngster Reece James both getting braces, with Danny Welbeck, who opened the scoring with a brilliant goal from 25-yards out, also got on the scoring sheet, as United picked up the Chevrolet Cup.

Van Gaal changed his formation for the game to 3-5-2 with Darren Fletcher being selected as the captain for the night.

“It is fantastic how they have performed today,” van Gaal said on ManUtd.com. “When you see us train, you can expect something but not 7-0. It was a surprise, but they were beautiful goals and beautiful attacks.

“The result always matters. With such a result you get confidence. We introduced a new system and played twice on the training pitch, 11 v 11. It is not very much, but the boys are willing to pick up the information. Last week, 10 players who played tonight were not even at our training complex.

“When I see my team playing a new system, it is better to win 7-0 than to lose because the players will then doubt the system. But now I don’t have that problem.”

Man of the Match Ander Herrera, who was outstanding on his Manchester United debut was delighted with the performance and revealed that he will keep his shirt.

“It was a dream for me to play in the red shirt – I will keep this shirt with me always. I hope this is the start of a lot of games for United,” Herrera told ManUtd.com after the game.

“It wasn’t only me in this game though, I think the whole team enjoyed the game and did well.

“It’s the first match and we have done good things. It’s a good step and we’re very happy.”
