FORT LAUDERDALE, Sporting Alert – Villanova is the new No. 1 team in the AP college basketball top 25 rankings for Week 14, according to the latest release on Monday.
The Wildcats, who are the top rank side in the country for the first time, moved two places up from last week’s edition after Oklahoma and North Carolina, the previous No. 1 and No. 2 teams both suffered defeats over the weekend.
Villanova (20-3) collected 32 of the 65 first-place votes for 1,566 points this week.
During their fixtures last week, the Big East conference front-runners who are 10-1 in league play, collected a pair of wins over Creighton, 83-58 and then-No. 11 Providence, 72-60.
They were also avenging the 82-76 defeat to the Friars on Jan 24.
Up two spots this week as well is Maryland, which collected 13 first-place votes and 1,499 points in the Week 14 AP college basketball top 25 rankings.
The Terrapins (21-3) also earned a pair of victories last week over Nebraska and Purdue and are sitting second in the Big Ten standings with a 10-2 record behind Iowa.
Last week’s No. 1 side Oklahoma slipped two slots to No. 3 this week after the shocking and humbling 80-69 defeat to Kansas State at the weekend.
The Sooners (19-3) still managed to receive seven first-place votes for 1,472 points.
Receiving 11 first-place votes this week was Iowa, which moved one place up to No. 4 this week.
The Hawkeyes (19-4) won both their scheduled games last week, defeating Penn State, 73-49, and Illinois, 77-65.
The top 10 this week is completed by Kansas (19-4), which got one first-place vote at No. 6, Virginia (19-4), which also got the other first-place vote at No. 7, as well as Michigan State (20-4), North Carolina (19-4), which dropped both games last week and West Virginia (19-4).
Oregon (20-4), Miami (FL) (18-4), Louisville (19-4), Iowa State (17-6) and Texas A&M (18-5) round out the top 15.
Meanwhile, Texas (16-7) is in the top 25 this week at No. 24, so too is USC (18-5), at No. 23.
Indiana (22) and South Carolina (25) dropped out of the top 25 rankings this week.
