Week 15: ESPN NFL Power Index Rankings On Dec. 15

TEXAS, Sporting Alert – Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers continue to be No. 1 in the NFL Power Index Rankings for Week 15, but the Falcons are still heading the wrong way.

The Panthers put away Atlanta 38-0 on Sunday to improve to 13-0 on the season with Newton, the leading candidate at the moment for the regular season MVP award, leading the way once again in another win.

On the other hand, though, the Falcons (6-7) who started the season 5-0, have lost six in a row for the first time since 2007 and they were the biggest droppers in this week’s NFL Power Index Rankings — slipping 12 places to No. 27.

According to ESPN Stats & Info, Atlanta, who had scored 11 rushing TDs prior to the skid, has “no rushing touchdowns” in this current six-game losing streak.

This team is heading in the wrong direction and must be very disappointed with the way things are heading at the moment after such a bright start to the season.

Making the biggest jump this week were the Jacksonville Jaguars (5-8) who surged eight places to No. 21 after hammering fellow AFC South rivals Indianapolis Colts 51-16 to stay within touching distance of the leaders.

After scoring 39 points in the defeat to the Titans, the Jaguars have now scored 90 points in the past two weeks, which is more than any other club during that period.

Back-to-back wins over the New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills have helped the Eagles (6-7) to surge seven places to No. 12 this week as they hunt a playoff spot.

All three teams are 8-5 on the season, but using this week’s ESPN NFL Power Index Rankings to make a pick — the Steelers, at No. 6 and Chiefs, at No. 9, currently lead the Jets (No. 10) with three games left.

Still on their fixtures, though are the Cardinals, Redskins and Giants. Good times are ahead.

The battle in the AFC is beginning to take some steam, with the Kansas City Chiefs, Ney York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers fighting for two wild-card spots.

At the top on the overall list, the Arizona Cardinals (11-2), who clinched a playoff berth on Sunday, remain No. 2, while the Patriots (11-2) who also landed a playoff berth over the weekend, improved two places to No. 3 after rebounded from a two-game losing streak.

The Cincinnati Bengals (10-3) are down one place to No. 4 after falling to the Steelers and losing quarterback Andy Dalton and the Denver Broncos (10-3) are also down one spot after losing on Sunday.
