American Tianna Bartoletta is also entered in the event.

Elaine Thompson Set To Sizzle At Jamaica International Invitational

By:Gary Smith, Lead Sports Writer Published on: May 19, 2017 10:29 am Leave a Comment

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Sporting Alert — Olympic sprint double champion Elaine Thompson headlines a world-class list of athletes set to compete at the 2017 Jamaica International Invitational – the opening IAAF World Challenge meeting of the season – at the National Stadium on Saturday (20).

Watch Live Streaming on 1Spotmedia.com. Visit the Jamaica International Invitational website for more details.

Thompson v Jackson Could Be Very Fast

Shericka Jackson of Jamaica
Shericka Jackson of Jamaica at the Rio Olympic Games

Thompson, who won gold medals in the women’s 100m and 200m events at the Rio Olympic Games in Brazil last summer, has been in immaculate form thus far on the season and she will look to extend her run when she contests the women’s 200m.

The MVP sprinter has already posted respective times of 22.19 (200m) and 10.78 (100m) in the opening legs of the 2017 IAAF Diamond League series in Doha and Shanghai.

The 24-year-old will start as the favourite to run away with another victory in front of the home supporters this weekend.

One of the main challengers for Thompson at this year’s Jamaica International Invitational is her club teammate Shericka Jackson, the World and Olympic 400m bronze medallist.

Jackson has also competed strongly over the shorter sprints this season — producing personal bests in both the 100m (11.24) and 200m (22.57).

Also lining up in the event are Jamaicans Simone Facey and Jura Levy, as well as Americans Shalonda Solomon and Candyce McGrone in addition to Tynia Gaither from the Bahamas.

De Grasse v Merritt Over 200m

Andre De Grasse of Canada
Andre De Grasse of Canada at Rio Olympic Games

In the men’s event, Canadian sprint star and triple Olympic medallist, Andre De Grasse, will lead a solid lineup when he races for the first time in Jamaica.

De Grasse, who has featured in two open 100m already this term, will make his season debut in the flat 200m.

His main challenge should come from American former world and Olympic 400m champion LaShawn Merritt, who will be racing in his third 200m this campaign.

London Olympics bronze medallist and 2013 IAAF World championships silver medal winner Warren Weir of Jamaica, as well as fellow countrymen Nickel Ashmeade, a semi-finalist at Rio 2016 and reigning Commonwealth Games champion Rasheed Dwyer, will lead the Jamaican charges.

Great Britain’s Zharnel Hughes, who finished fifth at the World Championships in 2015, is also in the field and will make his first appearance in the 200m in 2017.

Solid Men’s and Women’s 100m Fields

Allyson Felix v Shaunae Miller

The men’s and women’s 100m events have also setup some tasty clashes.

In the women’s race, American sprinter Allyson Felix will take on a solid field, which will include Jamaicans Christania Williams, a finallist in Rio, and Gayon Evans, the IAAF Indoor tour 60m champion.

Rio 100m and 200m finalist Michelle-Lee Ahye of Trinidad and Tobago and Americans Jenna Prandini and Morolake Akinosun are also entered in the event.

On the men’s side, former world 100m record holder Asafa Powell will aim to add to his sub-10 seconds 100m collection when he makes his third appearance in the event this season.

The 34-year-old should be tested by countryman Yohan Blake, the 2011 world champion, Commonwealth Games champion Kemar-Bailey Cole of Jamaica and American Mike Rodgers.

Ronnie Baker of USA, Jamaican-born Turkish sprinter Jak Ali Harvey, as well as Jamaicans Nesta Carter and Julian Forte will also compete.

Also on the track, Jamaicans Javon Francis, Demish Gaye and Fitzroy Dunkley will battle against USA’s Tony McQuay and Belgium’s Kevin Borlee in the men’s 400m.

The women’s category sees Americans Natasha Hastings, Phyllis Francis, Ashley Spencer and Courtney Okolo going head-to-head with Jamaicans Stephenie-Ann McPherson, Novelene Williams-Mills, Christine Day and Anneisha McLaughlin-Whilby.

Harrison Pulls Out of Sprint Hurdles

Meanwhile, women’s 100m hurdles world record holder Kendra Harrison of the U.S. will not compete in Kingston, after fracturing her hand at the Doha Diamond League meeting earlier this month.

However, Harrison’s compatriots Nia Ali and Kristi Castlin, the Olympic silver and bronze medallists, are both good to go and the pair will join fellow Americans Sharika Nelvis and meet record-holder Jasmine Stowers at the starting line.

Leading the home charges are Megan Simmonds and Danielle Williams, the 2015 world champion.

In the men’s 110m hurdles, US champion and Olympic finallist Devon Allen makes his debut in Jamaica and he will battle with teammates Ronnie Ash and Jarrett Eaton, the winner at last year’s Jamaica International Invitational.

Rio semi-finalists Andrew Riley and Deuce Carter, as well as Tyler Mason are the Jamaican trio looking to stop a USA podium sweep.

In action in the field, Columbian two-time world and Rio Olympic triple jump champion Caterine Ibarguen will make her season debut against Jamaica’s Shanieka Thomas-Ricketts.

Jamaica’s Fedrick Dacres, who leads the world list in the men’s discus throw, will hope to improve on his ranking in the event, while Sam Kendricks, the American Rio bronze medallist, starts as the man to beat in the pole vault.

Elaine Thompson Blasts To Wind-Aided 10.71secs In Kingston

By:Gary Smith, Lead Sports Writer Published on: May 7, 2016 9:31 pm Leave a Comment

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Sporting Alert – Elaine Thompson thought she had destroyed her 100m personal best when she crossed the finishing line at the 2016 Jamaica International Invitational at the National Stadium in Kingston on Saturday.

However, after sizzling to a stunning 10.71 seconds to win the women’s event, the Jamaican world 200m silver medallist realized that her performance was assisted by a +2.4 m/s tailwind.

After the race, Thompson was a little disappointed about not achieving a personal best, but was happy with the execution.

“I’ve been training really hard so I just went out there to execute and that’s what I did and came out victorious,” she said.

The 23-year-old, who revealed that she wants to win the 100m and 200m at the Olympic Games in Rio, this summer, got away to a good start, but she was still slightly behind the usually quick-starting American English Gardner in the opening 30m.

Nevertheless, the World Indoor bronze medallist from Portland 2016 in March, got into her running strides midway through the contest and quickly moved away from her challengers before opening up a three-metre lead in the closing metres.

Gardner held on to take second place in 10.85 secs, with Trinidad and Tobago’s Michelle-Lee Ahye getting third in a time of 10.98.

In the men’s race, Commonwealth Games champion Kemar Bailey-Cole clocked 10.01 seconds for first place in his opening 100m of the season.

Bailey-Cole made the Jamaican team to the IAAF World Championships last summer, but was forced to pull out with a hamstring injury.

He said he was a little surprised with his season opener.

“I feel very good,” Bailey-Cole said after the race.

“This means a lot to me because it’s my first 100m [in 2016] and I didn’t expect to go this fast, really.”

USA’s Mike Rodgers took second in 10.03, just ahead of a pair of Jamaicans, Julian Forte (10.06) and Andrew Fisher (10.07).

Loved Asafa Powell Holds On

Asafa Powell, perhaps running his toughest race for some time, held on to win the men’s 200m, despite hitting a brick wall over the last 50m.

Powell, who was greeted with the evening’s loud cheers when he entered the track, was running his second 200m of the season, and indeed, the second one in about five-years, got away to a sizzling start and took the lead heading in the home straight.

However, as expected, the 33-year-old began to fade as he approached the finishing line, but managed to hold on for the victory in a season’s best time of 20.45.

Powell, the former world 100m record holder, then took some time to snap a few shots with the local fans before heading off to do his cool down.

He was also presented with the Howard Aris award during the award ceremony – named after the late president of the Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association.

American Bejee Lee took second in 20.52 ahead of Rasheed Dwyer of Jamaica, third in 20.52.

Fraser-Pryce A No Show

In the absence of world and Olympic 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica, Bahamian world championships 400m silver medallist Shaunae Miller, blew the field away to win the women’s 200m in 22.14 (2.2 m/s).

In the meantime, Janieve Russell and Jeffery Gibson won the women’s and men’s respective 400m hurdle races.

Russell, the 2012 World Junior champion and IAAF World Championships finalist from Beijing, last year, pulled away from her rivals in the homestretch to take the women’s race in 54.61.

The Stephen Francis-coached hurdler got home ahead of countrywoman Ristananna Tracey (55.31) and American Leah Nugent (56.24).

“I am very excited about my performance,” Russell said.

“It wasn’t done as properly as I was told by my coach, but overall I am happy because I opened with a personal best.

“I am training really hard.”

Gibson, the tallest competitor in the field, raced back powerfully over the last 50m to take the men’s event in 48.96, the third-fastest time in the world this year.

Jamaica’s Jaheel Hyde, who is still a junior and will look to defend his title later this summer in Bydgoszcz, Poland, also had an encouraging finish in the closing metres to take second in 49.16.

Bershawn Jackson, the 2005 world champion led the race heading into the final two barriers, but the American was unable to hold on to the lead and had to settle for third in 49.29.

Another local star, Roxroy Cato (JAM) took fourth in 49.32.

In the opening 400m races, Jamaica’s Javon Francis took the men’s division in 44.85 ahead of Vernon Norwood (USA) 45.00, Kevin Borlee (BEL) 45.17, while American Francena McCorory captured the women’s race in 50.52 ahead of Novlene Williams-Mills (JAM), 50.87 and Stephenie McPherson (JAM), 51.20.

Asafa Powell Starts Favourite For Jamaica Invitational 200m Title

By:Gary Smith, Lead Sports Writer Published on: May 6, 2016 10:26 am Leave a Comment

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Sporting Alert – Sprinter Asafa Powell will start as the favourite to win the men’s 200m at the Jamaica International Invitational in Kingston on Saturday, following the withdrawal of Canada’s Andre De Grasse.

Powell, a former world-record holder over the 100m, opened his 2016 campaign in the 200m with a 20.51 seconds performance in Texas, last month, but before that the Jamaican sprinter had not run a competitive half lap race since 2011.

The 2008 Olympic Games 4x100m relay gold medallist has a personal best of 19.90 in the event, set in 2006.

Embed from Getty Images

However, in his last outing over the distance at the Jamaica International Invitational five-years-ago at the National Stadium, Powell trailed home last in 21.40

With De Grasse opted to skip this meeting, which is one of the events in the IAAF World Challenge series, Powell’s main challenges should come from fellow countryman Rasheed Dwyer, the Pan American Games silver medallist who has three sub-20 seconds performances to his name, including two last year when he ran his personal best of 19.80 in Toronto.

De Grasse, the IAAF World Championships bronze medallists from Beijing, last year, has a personal best of 19.88 and 2016 best of 20.23, and the Pan American Games sprint double champion was expected to push the local men towards a quick time in Kingston.

Meanwhile, the men’s 100m is loaded with young and experienced talents.

IAAF 2007 triple world champion Tyson Gay of USA is among the leading contenders looking to get their Olympic Games preparation campaigns underway.

The American, though, should have his hands full on the night, against fellow countryman Mike Rodgers and Jamaicans Kemar Bailey-Cole, Julian Forte and Oshane Bailey.

Bailey-Cole, who trains at the same track club as world record holder Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake here in Kingston, is returning after a bad injury interrupted his season last year.

Forte, another of the country’s bright young talents, had an impressive campaign last year in both the 100m and 200m and the 22-year-old will be one of the men to watch this weekend.

Sanya Richards-Ross Withdraws From Jamaica International Invitational

By:Gary Smith, Lead Sports Writer Published on: May 3, 2016 8:14 pm Leave a Comment

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Sporting Alert – Sanya Richards-Ross has pulled out of the Jamaica International Invitational with a toe injury, meeting director Donald Quarrie has revealed on Tuesday night.

The IAAF World Challenge Meeting will stage at the National Stadium in Kingston on Saturday 7, May.

Richards-Ross, who announced last month that she will retire when the term closes, was looking forward to racing one last time in front of the Jamaican crowd this weekend, but the injury has now preventing her from competing.

According to local television station Television Jamaica (TVJ), the Jamaican-born American aggravated the injury while running a 4x400m leg in the USA v The World at the Penn Relays over the weekend.

The five-time IAAF World Championships gold medallist was returning from her third surgery on her right big toe in November.

“I have really been struggling with injuries in my right big toe. I’ve had now three surgeries, this last one was in November.

“[I] worked really really hard to get back to this point, but I see this has being my last effort. I really want to make it my best and really enjoy this time,” she said.

Prior to the announcement, the 31-year-old said she was excited to compete for the final time in front of the local fans.

“There is no way I was going to miss that meeting,” she said on TVJ. “I had surgery on my foot in November (but) my training is coming along very well.

“I do want to put on a great show, but at the same time I want to be patient this season because my main goal is to make the (Olympic) team and represent well in Rio so this race is more for the fans.

“I just want to be in the building. I want to experience that energy one more time and I am going to give my best effort.”

Richard-Ross has won four Olympic gold medials, including gold at London 2012 over the 400m.

She will be hoping to defend her crown in Brazil this summer.

Jamaica International Invitational: Fraser-Pryce, Thompson Confirmed

By:Gary Smith, Lead Sports Writer Published on: March 2, 2016 3:28 pm Leave a Comment

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Sporting Alert – Jamaican speedsters and training partners Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Elaine Thompson have both been confirmed for the Jamaica International Invitational – IAAF World Challenge – meeting scheduled for May 7.

Fraser-Pryce, the Olympic and world 100m champion has been a regular competitor at the local meeting since making her first appearance in 2007.

The 29-year-old who has also competed and won the 200m at the Kingston meet in 2011, 2013 and 2014, is set to make her fifth appearance, according to the organisers.

Meanwhile, rising star and world 200m silver medallist Thompson will again be using the Jamaica International Invitational as part of her preparations for the Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil, this coming summer.

At last year’s event, Thompson alerted track and field supporters about her talent when she posted a flashing 10.92 seconds to win the women’s 100m, which was a world-lead and personal best for her at the time.

She went on the lower that mark to 10.84 seconds later in the month in Eugene, Oregon.

The 23-year-old then went on to grab a silver medal in the 200m at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing China, later in the summer with a personal best time of 21.66.

Also confirmed for the meet so far is American sprinter Mike Rodgers, the 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championships silver medallist.

Rodgers has a personal best of 9.85 secs in the 100m and he finished fifth over that event at last year’s world outdoor championships.

Jamaicans Rusheen McDonald and Rasheed Dwyer have also been confirmed for the Jamaica International Invitational meet at the National Stadium in Kingston.

McDonald, who shockingly set a new national record of 43.93 secs over the 400m in the heats in Beijing, last year, will compete in his primary event while Dwyer, the Commonwealth Games 200m champion and Pan American Championships silver medallist from Toronto, Canada last year, owns a personal best of 19.80 over the half-lap event.

Asafa Powell Flashes To World-Leading 9.84 At JA Invite

Asafa Powell
Asafa Powell of Jamaica in action of the 100m

KINGSTON, Jamaica (Sporting Alert) — Former world record holder Asafa Powell blasted his way to a world-leading 9.84 seconds to win the men’s 100m title at the Jamaica International Invitational here on Saturday night.

The time was his fastest since 2011.

Follow Our Live Blogging Updates From Jamaica Invite 2015

Powell, who opened his season with a 10.08secs performance in Guadeloupe a week ago, promised something impressive at the National Stadium in Kingston, and the 32-year-old truly delivered to send a strong statement to his rivals.

He powered through the middle of the pack on his way to becoming the first sub-10 seconds runner this season — bettering the 10.01secs, ran by Trinidad and Tobago’s Keston Bledman earlier this season.

He was then joined by two more runners in the same race.

Ryan Bailey, who anchored USA’s 4x100m relay team ahead of Usain Bolt and Jamaica at the IAAF World Relays 2015 a week ago, ran home second in 9.93, with Jamaica’s Nesta Carter taking third-place with a time of 9.98.

As expected, Bailey was also targeted by several group of Jamaican fans who showered him with boos, for playfully modifying Bolt’s famous ‘To Di Worl’ pose with his own cut throat gesture during his 4x100m relay celebrations in the Bahamas.

World leader Elaine Thompson of Jamaica hammered down yet another sub-11 seconds performance this season, after she posted 10.97 seconds to beat a solid field in the women’s 100m.

Thompson, who owns the world’s best time for 2015, at 10.92 got the better of Commonwealth Games champion Blessing Okabare of Nigeria, at 11.05 and American 200m specialist Allyson Felix, who stepped down in distance to clock 11.09 for third place.

In the women’s 200m, Bahamas’ 2010 World Junior champion Shaunae Miller ran 22.14 secs to beat Tori Bowie (USA, 22.29) and double world champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (JAM, 22.39).

The men’s race was won by Nickel Ashmeade (JAM, 20.25), ahead of his Jamaican teammate Rasheed Dwyer (20.28), Aaron Brown (CAN, 20.30), and Julian Forte (JAM, 20.39).

American Bershawn Jackson ran a well judged race to produce a world-leading 48.47 to win the men’s 400m hurdles title.

The 2005 World champion raced off to a fast start before keeping his pace balanced and then powered home to improved on the previous world-leading mark of 48.44, set by his fellow American countryman Michael Stigler, in Texas, in March.

Jackson beat Jamaica’s Ledford Green (49.22) and Jeffery Gibson (BAH) 49.42 into second and third place, respectively.

Kori Carter made a sweep of the 400m hurdles for the Americans, after she won the women’s race in a seasonal best of 55.12 seconds. The time is also the second fastest in the world this year behind USA’s Kendra Harrison’s  54.94 seconds.

Jamaica’s 2012 World Junior champion and 2014 Commonwealth Games bronze medal winner Janive Russell, ran 55.29 for second and third went to Tiffany Williams of USA, at 55.35.

Elsewhere at the meet, Ajee Wilson (USA) won the women’s 800m in 2:00.65 in front of Molly Ludlow (USA) 2:01.09, while Jasim Stowers (USA) won the women’s 100m hurdles in a time of 12.39m, Caterine Ibarguen of Columbia set a world best of 14.65 meters to win the women’s triple jump and Christian Cantwell (USA) took the men’s Shot Put.

Aleec Harris, the world-leader for the men’s 110m hurdles, equalled his own fastest time in the world this season and added another victory to his tally this term with a 13.16 performance in Kingston.

Fraser-Pryce, who won the 200m at the Jamaica International Invitational in Kingston, last week, will lineup against a strong field that also includes Nigerian star Blessing Okagbare, who was the winner in this event in Kingston.

The lineup will also see Jamaican Kerron Stewart and Carrie Russell, as well as American English Gardner facing the starter’s gun.

In the men’s sprint, with world record holder Usain Bolt still not ready to compete, his training partner and fellow Jamaican Warren Weir, a world silver medallist and Olympic bronze medallist in the 200 metres, will take on a modest field in the half-lap.

Joining the Glen Mills coached sprinter will be Nickel Ashmeade of Jamaica, American Curtis Mitchell and Dutch sprinter Churandy Martina.

In the men’s 400m, world champion LaShawn Merritt of USA will look to avenge his defeat to Luguelín Santos of the Dominican Republic from the Jamaica International Invitational, when the pair do battle again in Doha.

Ethiopian world champion Mohammed Aman tops a men’s 800m field that also includes Andrew Osagie of Great Britain and South African Andre Olivier.

The women’s race sees Cuban world-leader Rose Mary Almanza leading the way, with American Chanelle Price, Kenyan former world champion Janeth Jepkosgei Busienei and Jennifer Meadows of Great Britain also in the field.

Elsewhere, South African Zarck Visser heads the men’s long jump field, along with USA’s Christian Taylor, USA’s David Oliver looks for success in the men’s 110m hurdles, Valerie Adams of New Zealand will again look to dominate the women’s Shot Put,  while the women’s 400m hurdles includes Americans Dalilah Muhammad and bronze medallist Lashinda Demus and Kaliese Spencer of Jamaica.
