Michigan Slips, Washington At No. 4: College Football Playoff Rankings

By:Brittney Berreth | Staff Writer Published on: November 29, 2016 9:24 pm Leave a Comment

NEW YORK, Sporting Alert – Michigan slipped three places in the College Football Playoff rankings but is still not out in the cold, as Alabama and Ohio State stay No. 1 and No. 2 in the latest poll.

The Wolverines (11-1, 7-2 Big Ten) dropped from third to fifth in the penultimate College Football Playoff rankings after losing to the Buckeyes, 30-27, last Saturday, but by placing them at No. 5, the selection committee is clearly not ruling them out of making the top four.

With Michigan sliding out of the top four this week, Pac-12 front-runners Washington moves up to No. 4 in the rankings and will be hoping to staple down that spot with a win in the Pac-12 title game against rival Colorado this weekend.

As expected, Alabama (12-0, 8-0 SEC) continues to be the top team in the rankings and should to be safe even with a loss in the SEC title game against Florida this weekend.

Ohio State is still second, despite being bumped out of the Big Ten championships game, while Clemson moves up one spot to No. 3 after clubbing South Carolina 56-7 at the weekend.

Wisconsin and Penn State who will face-off for the Big Ten title this coming weekend, hold their spots at No. 6 and No. 7 with Colorado sitting at No. 8.

Oklahoma and Oklahoma State complete the top 10 and will meet for the Big 12 title on Saturday

However, with the Sooners dropping to No. 9 this week it looks highly unlikely that the Big 12 will have a representative in the playoffs this season.

In fact, according to FiveThirtyEight, even if the Cowboys (9-2, 7-1 Big 12) were to beat Oklahoma (9-2, 8-0) in Saturday’s Bedlam game, they would have only a five-percent chance to make the College Football Playoff.

Meanwhile, despite winning its eight straight last week, USC did not move from No. 11, while Florida State is at No. 12, Louisville is 13th, Auburn is 14th and Florida comes in at No. 15.

West Virginia, Western Michigan, Stanford, Navy and Utah are 16 through 20.

LSU, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, Houston and Pittsburgh make up the last five.

Nebraska 16, Boise State 19 and Washington State 23, are the teams which dropped from the rankings.

The final Selection Day is Sunday, December 4.

Ohio State Is No. 2 In CFP; Michigan, Clemson Stay In Top 4

By:Brittney Berreth | Staff Writer Published on: November 15, 2016 9:36 pm Leave a Comment

NEW YORK, Sporting Alert – As expected, Alabama stays No. 1 in the latest College Football Playoff Rankings, while Ohio State moves into the top four for the first time this year.

The Crimson Tide (10-0), who is also the unanimous No. 1 team in the Associated Press Top 25, remained the top-ranked team in the country after easily putting away Mississippi State 51-3 on Saturday to stay undefeated this season.

However, all the attention was below the defending college football playoff champion as many waited anxiously to see the foreseen shake up.

Three of last week’s top four teams suffered defeats, which paved the way for Ohio State to move behind Alabama.

The Buckeyes (9-1) jumped three spots to second place this week after battering Maryland, 62-3.

It was the second time in successive week Urban Meyer’s team was outscoring opponents by a score of 62-3 this term.

At the same time, though, there wasn’t the major shake up everyone was anticipating, as Michigan and Clemson, which both went down to unranked teams on Saturday, stayed in the top four and Washingto isn’t completely out in the cold.

Michigan (9-1) was upset 14-13 by Iowa on Saturday, but stayed at No. 3 this week.

Clemson which was ranked No. 2 last week was beaten by Pittsburgh, 43-42, but slipped only two spots to No. 4

Last week’s fourth-ranked Huskies were upset 26-13 by a very impressive No. 20 USC side, but only slipped two slots to No. 6.

Below them, Wisconsin, Penn State, Oklahoma and Colorado round out the top 10 teams in the rankings this week.

Oklahoma State, Utah, USC, Western Virgin and Auburn are 11 through 15.

Meanwhile, Texas A&M, which No. 4 in the first college football rankings three weeks ago, is now at No. 25.

Alabama, as expected, continues to lead the list after receiving all 61 first-place votes from the media panel for 1,525 points.

The Crimson Tide (10-0, 7-0 SEC) made light weight of Mississippi State at the weekend, crushing the Bulldogs 51-3 to stay undefeated this season.

The Buckeyes (9-1, 6-1 Big Ten), meanwhile, improved to No. 2 this week after hammering Maryland 62-3 to collect back-to-back identical scores over an opponent, following the win over then-No. 9 Nebraska a week ago.

Ohio State, which is expected to do some moving in the next release of the College Football Playoff rankings, collected 1,455 points this week.

Louisville improved to No. 3 in this week’s AP Top 25 rankings after taking care of Wake Forest, 44-12 on Saturday.

Three of the top four from last week slipped in this week’s poll, with Michigan falling two places to No. 4, Clemson down to No. 5 from No. 3 and Washington dropping three spots to No. 7.

The Clemson Tigers were shocked by Pittsburgh 43-42 on Saturday after going into the game as strong favourites, while Michigan failed to get going on offense and was beaten 14-13 on a late field goal at Iowa.

Washington was beaten at USC on Saturday.

All three teams went into the weekend’s college football fixtures with undefeated records.

Wisconsin moved up a spot to No. 6, while Oklahoma, Penn State and West Virginia complete the top 10.

Utah, Colorado, Oklahoma State, Western Michigan and USC are 11 through 15.

LSU is No. 16 and it’s followed in the rankings by Florida State, Auburn, Nebraska and Washington State in the top 20.

San Diego State, at No. 24 and Troy, which is ranked for the first time in school history, at No. 25 are the new teams in the AP Top 25 Rankings this week, while Virginia Tech, North Carolina dropped and Baylor all dropped out of the poll.
