The Buckeyes did not play their scheduled game at Illinois last week due to an increase in positive COVID-19 tests within the program. The decision was made with the health, safety, and well-being of the student-athletes is the main concern.

Ohio State and Michigan State will be playing for the 49th time in series history on Saturday. The Buckeyes hold a 33-15 all-time advantage and have won each of the last four meetings, including a 34-10 win last year at Ohio Stadium.

The Buckeyes have won seven straight in the series in games played in East Lansing. Their last loss at Spartan Stadium was a 23-7 setback in 1999. Ohio State has won 13 of the last 16 games between the team teams since MSU won back to back games in 1998 and 1999.

Ohio State leads the Big Ten Conference and ranks 16th nationally with 233.2 rushing yards per game.

Michigan State is coming off perhaps its most noteworthy win of the 2020 season, a 29-20 upset of then-No. 8 Northwestern last Saturday in East Lansing.

Quarterback Rocky Lomdardi threw eight touchdown passes in five games while completing 54.1 percent of his passes for 1,057 yards.

Game Highlights: #23 Ohio State Beats UMass Lowell, 74-64

By:Sports Desk Published on: November 29, 2020 6:51 pm Leave a Comment

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 23 ranked Ohio State men’s basketball team improved to 2-0 on the young 2020-21 season with a 74-64 victory over UMass Lowell (1-2) Sunday afternoon. Senior Duane Washington Jr. led four Buckeyes in double figures with 21 points while senior Kyle Young and sophomore E.J. Liddell pulled down eight rebounds apiece.

Justice Sueing followed up his fine debut game with the Buckeyes – 19 points and eight rebounds Wednesday vs. Illinois State – with 15 points and six rebounds. C.J. Walker, who was 9-of-10 from the free throw line, added 13 points while Liddell chipped in 11. Freshmen Zed Key was solid off the bench with eight points and four rebounds.

“Give our guys a lot of credit for finishing the game and making the necessary plays when they needed to,” said fourth-year Ohio State coach Chris Holtmann. “We’ve got a lot of work to do, though.”

Ohio State played without junior guard Musa Jallow, who sat out the game on the bench in a walking boot. Holtmann said after the game he found out after the tip that he had a lower leg issue and that something had happened in warmups.

Meanwhile, UMass Lowell was led by guard Obadiah Noel with 15 points. Guards Anthony Blunt and Bryce Daley scored 11 points apiece.

“I thought our team played well,” said River Hawks coach Pat Duquette. “It was an exciting game and we had a chance to win it right down to the last minute, which is a great spot for us to be in.

“This was really exciting for our guys to make this trip to come out here and play Ohio State of the Big Ten, such a well-coached team and program. It was a really nice trip and we were grateful to get two games in because we all know how hard that is these days.

“So, overall I was really pleased with the way we played, but I thought we made some careless mistakes at a crucial point in the game and against a good team like Ohio State, that’s all it takes.”

For the game, Ohio State shot 40 percent from the field but only 22.2%. from beyond the arc (4 of 18). UMass Lowell shot 37.5 pct. from the field for the game. Ohio State held a 41-31 rebounding advantage.

UP NEXT

The Buckeyes next play on Wednesday, Dec. 2, with a 5 p.m. game against Morehead State University at Value City Arena.

The River Hawks’ next matchup has yet to be determined, as their next two non-conference games on the schedule have been postponed.

Alabama, Notre Dame, Clemson, Ohio State Lead College Football Playoff Rankings

By:Brittney Berreth | Staff Writer Published on: November 24, 2020 8:01 pm Leave a Comment

MIAMI, FL – Alabama grabbed No. 1 in the first College Football Playoff Top 25 rankings released live on ESPN on Tuesday night, but it was shocking to see BYU at No. 14 to start the rankings, despite a 9-0 start to its season.

The Crimson Tide (7-0) have been dominate thus far this season and it is not surprising to see the SEC powerhouses starting the rankings as the top team. Alabama tops the College Football Rankings for the first time since the final rankings of the 2018 season, according to ESPN Stats and Information. No team has been ranked atop the CFP rankings more than Alabama, which is now there for the 19th time.

Alabama, as expected, starts the initial rankings ahead of fellow undefeated club Notre Dame (8-0) at No. 2, with Clemson (7-1), despite losing once already this season, sitting at No. 3 and Ohio State (4-0) rounding out the top four at No. 4.

Many were surprised to see Clemson ahead of Ohio State, but it’s clear the selection committee thinks the Tigers, who fell to Notre Dame in two overtimes without Trevor Lawrence, is a better team than the Buckeyes, who failed to convince the panel with just a narrow win over Indiana over the weekend.

Despite entering at fourth in Week 1 of the the CFP rankings, Ohio State’s chance of finishing in the top four at the end of the regular season is still high – sitting at 72-percent, according to ESPN Football Index.

Clemson, meanwhile has a smaller chance, according to the FPI, as the Tigers, who could face the Fighting Irish again in the ACC Championships, start with a 33-percent chance.

Meanwhile, Texas A&M (5-1) is No. 5 and gets the nod in the head-to-head look back over No. 6 Florida (6-1)

Cincinnati (8-0) is at No. 7 and Northwestern (5-0) is No. 8, with sitting at No. 9 is Georgia (5-2), the highest-rated two-loss team after defeats to both Alabama and Florida, while and Miami (7-1) rounding out the Top 10.

No. 11 is Oklahoma and is followed by Indiana, Iowa State, BYU and Oregon to round out the Top 15. The next five is completed by Wisconsin at No. 16, Texas, USC, North Carolina and Coastal Carolina. No. 21 is Marshall and is followed by Auburn, Oklahoma State, Iowa and Tulsa, which debuts at No. 25 in the CFP rankings.

No. 3 Ohio State Survives 42-35 Against No. 9 Indiana; Penix Jr. Outplays Fields

By:Adam Fratzke Published on: November 21, 2020 7:20 pm Leave a Comment

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 3 Ohio State held out for a battling 42-35 victory over No. 9 Indiana to remain undefeated on the season and stay in the College Football Playoff conversations.

The Buckeyes (4-0) were far from their best on Saturday, but did enough to avoid the upset in what former CFP winning coach Urban Meyer described as a “balanced performance on offense.”

It was 18th straight win for Ohio State against an AP-ranked Big Ten teams, which is the longest such streak against conference opponents in the AP Poll era (since 1936), according ESPN Stats and Information.

The researchers also revealed that It was also the Buckeyes’ 26th straight win vs Indiana, which is the longest winning streak against a single opponent in Big Ten history.

BIG DAY FOR TEAGUE, WILSON, OLAVE

On Saturday, Ohio State tallied over 600 yards of total offense, including an impressive 307 on the ground and held Indiana to -1 yard rushing on the defensive side.

Despite having a shaky day, which saw him throwing three interceptions – his first of the season – quarterback Justin Fields tallied 300 yards on 18 of 30 passes with two touchdowns for Ohio State. He also added 78 yards rushing and another score.

Master Teague rushed for 169 yards on 26 carries with two touchdowns, while Trey Sermon added 60 yards to the total on the ground.

For the third time this season, both Ohio State wide received Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave topped the 100-yard mark. Wilson had seven catches for 169 yards and two scores and Olave grabbed eight catches for 101 yards.

PENIX JR. OUTPLAYED FIELDS

Michael Penix Jr. was outstanding on the day for Indiana (4-1), throwing for a career-high 491 yards and five touchdowns on 27 of 51 completed passes with one interception.

Wide receiver Ty Fryfogle was also outstanding with seven catches for 218 yards and three touchdowns.

The Hoosiers kept Ohio State scoreless in the fourth quarter, while scoring 14 points.

“We’re a great team,” Penix Jr. said. “The guys fought. We’ll fight the whole 60 minutes. “I love what I saw. We didn’t get the results we wanted, we have a lot to correct, but we’ll keep pushing forward.”

Despite the loss, Penix Jr. becomes only the 3rd player all-time with 400 Pass yds and 5 TDs in a game against the Buckeyes, ESPN Stats and Information revealed.

Penix Jr. joins Minnesota’s Mike Hohensee (1981) and Illinois’ Dave Wilson (1980). Hohensee is the only one in this trio to win the game.

“We did a lot of great things,” Penix said, “but we can do better. We have to find a way to win. We have to finish. The defense gave us opportunities at the end. We have to take advantage of it.”

No. 1 Ohio State Rallied To Beat No. 8 Wisconsin In Big Ten Championship game

By:CEDRIC HANCOCK Published on: December 8, 2019 9:13 am Leave a Comment

INDIANAPOLIS, Sporting Alert — Season performers Justin Fields and J.K. Dobbins recovered from respective slow starts to lead No. 1 Ohio State to a comeback 34-21 win over No. 8 Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship game on Saturday night.

The Buckeyes (13-0), looking completely out of sorts in the first half, had a frustrating opening 30 minutes and trailed 21-7 at the half.

However, arguably the nation’s most complete team kept the Badgers scoreless in the second half, as it rallied from the double-digit deficit by scoring 27 unanswered points in the second half to set up the victory in Indianapolis.

K.J. Hill had two TD catches for Ohio State in the win

Fields threw three touchdown passes after connecting with K.J. Hill twice from 16 and 13 yards and also found Jeremy Ruckert, who took a sizzling catch from 16 yards.

Fields went 19-for-31 for 299 yards without an interception.

“I think the whole team knew we didn’t play to our potential in the first half,” Fields said.

“We got together and came out with confidence in the second half and just played our game.”

Hill caught seven passes for 83 yards, while Chris Olave took five catches for 94 yards.

Running back Dobbins, meanwhile, carried the ball 33 times for 172 yards and a touchdown for Ohio State, which won its third straight conference title and certainly cement its place in the Top 2 of the College Football Playoff rankings.

“We took their best shot but we still had a half,” Dobbins said. “It would be cool to be No. 1. We’re a complete team, I think.”

Wisconsin (10-3) jumped out to a 14-0 lead after Jonathan Taylor ran home for a 44-yard touchdown and active quarterback Jack Coan rushed for 14 yards to double the score.

Coan also ran for another touchdown in the first half. He was 17 for 33 with 232 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions.

Jonathan Taylor rushed for 148 yards and one touchdown for the Badgers, who lost their past four title games, including three to Ohio State, since winning three straight from 2010-12.

Taylor became the seventh player in FBS history to reach 6,000 yards rushing in his career, but was disappointed at missing out on the ultimate goal.

“We let it slip away,” Taylor said. “Just disappointed, like I said, because that (a championship) was my goal coming into the season.”

Quintez Cephus had seven catches for 122 yards for Wisconsin in the defeat.
